Thank you, Rep. Sarah McBride, D-Del., for voting no on the Laken Riley Act, which seeks to strip even more of our liberties and freedoms. It’s political theater, serving up red meat to the base, who are hungry to see cruelty inflicted on others. This bill is about stoking fear, hate and division to dismantle our constitutional protections. It is the policy of overzealous politicians and authoritarians to make people so fearful they will willingly give up their own liberties. Anyone can get swept up into this hunger and feeding frenzy to round up people and throw them in prison indefinitely.
The bill includes many immigrants who are authorized to be here, including Dreamers and those with temporary status. The legislation contains no exemption for minors. It could mandate indefinite detention, even if the person is innocent. The bill gives unprecedented authority to attorneys general over our freedoms. Attorneys general could deny doctors, engineers and students from getting visas to enter Delaware and other states throughout the country.
If “Make America Great Again” followers were really interested in saving lives, public safety and protecting our communities, they would address the No. 1 killer of children: guns. They refuse to do that. They are not interested. That tells you all you need to know about how serious they are about saving lives.
Sens. Chris Coons and Lisa Blunt Rochester, both D-Del., should not succumb to this political theater. Our senators should vote no on the Laken Riley Act, which is nothing more than a smash and grab of our freedoms.
