Brett: McBride’s courageous vote shows leadership we need

Posted

Rep. Sarah McBride, D-Del., is exemplifying the type of leader America needs — one who stands firm in the face of public outrage and pushes for justice rooted in reason and humanity. Her no vote against the Laken Riley Act, a law that would severely impact undocumented immigrants, is a powerful testament to her commitment to fairness and thoughtful governance.

The tragedy of Laken Riley’s murder is undeniable and heart-wrenching, but it should not be used as a pretext for policies that threaten the civil rights and safety of millions. The Laken Riley Act proposes sweeping measures that would allow the federal detention of undocumented immigrants — including Dreamers, minors and those with temporary protected status — based on accusations that may have little or no merit. This bill would authorize detention without a clear path to release if charges are later dropped, without necessary safeguards against wrongful detention. It is a blunt, dangerous tool that risks criminalizing an entire community based on prejudice rather than evidence.

What makes Rep. McBride’s stance so crucial is her willingness to confront the growing tide of fear-based legislation that capitalizes on tragedy. As history has shown, when the public is consumed by anger and fear, it is easy for lawmakers to pass sweeping laws that serve political expediency rather than true justice. The 2002 Iraq War resolution and the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act are just two examples of laws that were later recognized as harmful, enacted when leaders gave in to public pressure, rather than standing firm for what was right.

It’s often harder to identify heroes in real time, especially when the “angry mob” is made up of our neighbors, family members and co-workers. But McBride’s actions show us that heroism isn’t about adhering to popular sentiment — it’s about standing up for what’s just, even when it’s unpopular or difficult.

We don’t need laws that fuel further division and pain. We need immigration reform that prioritizes dignity, fairness and humane treatment. Rep. Sarah McBride’s vote against the Laken Riley Act proves she is the kind of leader who stands for those values, even when it requires pushing back against the forces of fear and division.
