Allen Nelson announced Thursday that in spite of blustery weather over the previous few days, with more in the forecast, the Cambridge Classic Powerboat Regatta will be held as scheduled on Saturday.

CAMBRIDGE – It takes more than a little rain to stop this crew. 

Though many events scheduled for the Eastern Shore this weekend have already been canceled, that’s not the case for the Cambridge Classic Powerboat Regatta.

“We’re going,” Cambridge Powerboat Racing Association Vice Commodore Allen Nelson said on Thursday afternoon. “People are traveling, a lot of boats are coming 1,000 miles or more, they’ve left.”

There have been thunderstorms and downpours over the last few days, and more are forecast, but those aren’t the elements of weather that worry racers the most. The wind is always of more concern to the organizers and drivers, because of the threat posed to the small, light and very fast-moving craft.

But this week, systems are moving across the area from the south, or leeward of the river - in other words, the racing area will be protected from the worst of any gusts from that direction.

One aspect of race day will be affected, however. No part of the event will take place on the grass of Great Marsh Park.

The interior of the park has been used for parking and camping in previous years, but with the ground as soggy as it is now, there would be too much damage to the turf. So, “Spectator parking will be at Sandy Hill Elementary School, and we’ll have shuttle buses running back and forth,” Mr. Nelson said.
