Boscov’s is investing $10 million in its Salisbury store by expanding and renovating in time for its 30th anniversary this fall, Jim Boscov, the company’s chairman and CEO, said during a store visit on Wednesday.
“Salisbury has been a good and growing market for us,” Boscov said. “There has been solid and steady growth.”
New customers in the past five years account for 62 percent of the store’s sales, he said.
Meanwhile, Macy’s another anchor store at the Centre at Salisbury, announced recently it will close its Salisbury location in the coming months.
Pier 1, which is in a satellite building at the mall, also announced it will close soon. The company also is closing its store in Ocean City
With Macy’s closing, Boscov’s is the last remaining original anchor store at the Centre at Salisbury.
Boscov said his privately owned company is better able to weather economic ups and downs than one that is publicly traded.
“We don’t work for the stock market,” he said.
Instead of closing stores, the company is adding them. Boscov’s 48th store just opened in Youngstown, Ohio, he said.
People are the key to the success of the business, he said. Twenty percent of the Salisbury store’s sales come from people who have been customers for 20 years or longer, and Boscov recognized long-time shopper Marcia Thompson of Seaford who first opened a store credit card in 1991.
He also presented gifts to five department heads who started working for the store when it opened.
“It’s all about people,” Boscov said. “The people who work here and the people who shop here.”
The Salisbury store has recently expanded into what was once an outdoor garden center. The additional square footage will allow several departments to grow.
The store also is currently being renovated throughout in time for the store’s 30th anniversary grand reopening celebration in the fall.
“I promise you a store that’s going to be exciting,” Boscov said. “It will look like a brand new store.”
Based in Reading, Pa., Boscov’s operates 48 stores in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Ohio. It is the nation’s largest family-owned department store chain.
Boscov’s is now celebrating its 106th year as a full-line, full-service department store.
