WILMINGTON - Born April 1, 1928, Betty J. (Everett) Shannon passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008. Betty dedicated her life to caring for others. She was a proud graduate of the Wilmington General Hospital Training School for Nurses, and was a licensed Registered Nurse. She often canvassed the neighborhood to solicit donations for charitable organizations. She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandsons, playing pinochle, and she was a crossword puzzle enthusiast. Born in Kenton, Betty was the daughter of the late Roy D. and Edith (Cook) Everett. Betty graduated in 1946 from John Bassett Moore High School in Smyrna. She was married for 44 years to John T. Shannon, who preceded her in death. She was also predeceased by her brother, Donald. Betty is survived by her six children, Cheryl Markiewicz (Robert) of Hockessin, Colleen Smith (Fred) of Wilmington, Elizabeth Christian of Dagsboro, Jacquelyn Shannon Gaunt (John) of Redington Shores, Fla., Jean Rickards (Hank) of Georgetown, and Michael Shannon of Ocean View; four grandsons, Justin Markiewicz, Brian Christian, Brett Smith, and Dane Smith; six siblings, Louise Berry, Howard Everett, Allen Everett, Peggy Snow, LeRoy Everett and Shirley Steele; and her good friend of 60 years, Ginny DiGennaro. A viewing and service to honor her life will take place at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. respectively. Interment will follow immediately at All Saints Cemetery, Kirkwood Highway. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963; or a charity of their choice. Arrangements by Mealey Funeral Home. www.mealeyfuneralhomes.com.
