Athletes of the Week: Dorell Little, Jr., Denim Perkins, Dover boys' basketball

DOVER — Dover High boys’ basketball players Dorell Little Jr. and Denim Perkins are this week’s State News Athletes of the Week.

The two seniors helped the Senators capture the program’s first DIAA state championship in boys’ basketball with wins over Middletown and Salesianum.

In the two games, Little tallied 47 points, 14 rebounds and six steals while playing 63 of the 64 minutes. He also blocked a potentially tying three-point shot by Sallies in the closing minutes of the state finals.

Perkins collected 28 points, going 14-of-15 from the foul line, with 18 assists, nine rebounds and seven steals while playing all 64 minutes of the two contests. The two players combined to net 47 points in Dover’s 56-53 win over the Sals in the state finals, including all but one of 33 second-half points.

While the Senators got key contributions from a number of players, it was Perkins and Little who led the way.

“I can’t say I’m surprised,” said Dover coach Stephen Wilson. “We’re not a two-man team but what they did, it does go down in the history books. They scored every point (in the second half) but one. That’s something you dream about as a player to be part of something like that.

“It’s our program, it’s what we do,” Wilson said about all the little things the Senators did to win the title. “Those guys believe in it and they led it.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.

All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print and online each Sunday.
