Dover High baseball player Hunter Chambers was voted the Athlete of the Week after helping the Senators reach the third round of the DIAA state tournament. The freshman righthander pitched 6 2/3 innings with five strikeouts in Dover’s state tourney upset of Concord.
Chambers also went 4-for-4 at the plate in the game and was 6-for-8 with four runs scored in three tournament games overall.
“Hunter really slowed the game down at the end of the year and his ability showed well for us in the playoffs,” said Senators coach Dave Gordon. “I believe he has the potential to be the next big-time arm at Dover High. I would not be surprised if schools call this summer about his availability. We are excited about his growth in our program and we will do our best to help him.”
The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.
This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.
All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print each Friday.
