Athlete of the Week: Gabe Cannon, Sussex Central wrestling

Posted

GEORGETOWN — Sussex Central High’s Gabe Cannon was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week.

Cannon was named the Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 175-pound state title at the DIAA individual state tournament last weekend. The senior posted three straight pins before knocking off the top seed in the finals.

The state title capped off a memorable season in which Cannon went 39-3 and won five titles out of the six tournaments he was in — while finishing second in the other. His career record of 127-21 includes a remarkable 102 pins.

Golden Knights coach Shane Miller calls Cannon “a role model for his peers.”

“Gabe has a mental edge over all of his opponents,” said Miller. “When he steps out on the mat he expects to win. Gabe has wrestled at 175/190 pounds for the last four years but he can scramble as if he is in a lighter weight class.

“His ability to score from all positions is impressive but he is dominant when he gets in the top position. This is why he has pinned 102 opponents.”

The Athlete of the Week is nominated and chosen by our readers. The nominating period starts at 2 p.m. on Friday and ends at noon on Monday. A voting period follows from 5 p.m. Monday through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

This process is performed exclusively online. When nominating an athlete, please include name, school and sport as well as a photo and brief description of why he or she deserves that week’s honor.

All nominations must be high school varsity athletes and come from high schools within Kent or Sussex counties. The winner appears in print and online each Sunday.
