Athlete of the Week: Connor McPhail, Dover baseball

Dover High baseball player Connor McPhail was voted the Delaware State News Athlete of the Week. The senior continued his streak of pitching in 11 straight games for the Senators in a 2-1 week.

A right-handed reliever, McPhail earned a two-inning save in a win over Milford, pitched part of a no-hitter against William Penn and threw five scoreless innings in a one-run loss to St. Georges.

In 9.2 innings, McPhail didn’t allow a run, gave up only four hits and struck out eight. He began the season as the Senators’ starting catcher but ended up on the mound.

“Connor has been the ultimate workhouse for our program this year,” said Dover coach Dave Gordon. “He accepted his role change and silently has become one of the better pitchers in the conference. With his ability to come in a game and throw three pitches for strikes, he has helped us turn the season around and make us more competitive.

“Our approach as a coaching staff is to keep his pitch count down and make sure he is always available. He has done a great job and I’m really proud of him.”
