Athlete of the Week: Carah Sumpter, Lake Forest softball

Posted

FELTON — Lake Forest High softball player Carah Sumpter was voted this week’s State News Athlete of the Week.

The junior pitcher had 17 strikeouts and hit a game-winning grand slam in the eighth inning of a 6-2 victory over Delmar. In three games, Sumpter has three home runs with a triple and a double

In the circle, Sumpter hasn’t allowed an earned run while striking out 23 and walking only three in 13 innings.

Sumpter was a first-team All-Henlopen South selection as a sophomore after earning second-team honors as a freshman.

“Carah has been solid for us on the mound the last two years and has showed consistent improvement,” said Lake Forest coach Gabi Cubbage. “She’s off to a great start this season as well. She’s confident and resilient on the mound. Those are two great characteristics for any player but especially a pitcher to have. Ultimately, it makes our team better and her teammates play with that same confidence and resiliency.

“In our game against Delmar this year, I think that was something that definitely stood out. She’s taking that same approach/mentality into the batter’s box. She’s seeing the ball well right now. We’re only three games in and she’s batting .455 with three home runs and 11 RBI. .... She’s been exciting to watch grow as an individual and as a player over the last few years.”
