Athlete of the Week: Anna Mumford, Sussex Academy swimming

Posted

GEORGETOWN — Sussex Academy freshman swimmer Anna Mumford was voted the State News’ Athlete of the Week.

Mumford was named the winner of the girls’ Vince Morris Outstanding Swimmer Award at the Henlopen Conference championship meet Feb. 10. She won the 200-yard freestyle (1:54.34) and 500-yard freestyle (5:01.76) while also swimming a leg on the Seahawks’ winning 200-yard medley (1:52.26) and 400-yard freestyle (3:45.11) relays.

The Selbyville resident’s 200-yard freestyle time broke a meet record that had stood since 2003 with her 500 time bettering a record that had been around since 2021. The Seahawks also won the Henlopen girls’ team title.

“What a tremendous athlete,” said Sussex Academy coach Tom Martiner. “I tell you what, the first time I saw Anna swim, it was evident that she was special. She was different than the others — how fluid her stroke is, her strength throughout it, her endurance throughout — really makes her second to none.

“But the other thing about Anna is she is a spectacular teammate. It’s almost sometimes that she is happier for the success of her teammates than for her own individual success. That’s something pretty special. And she’s happy and relaxed.”

Martiner said the 15-year-old swam in every event at some point during the season and never lost.
