DENTON, MD - Artis Virginia Holloway Truxon, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 21, 2008. She was born in Smithfield, Va., to the late Merritt and Mary Holloway, on July 25, 1917. She was the youngest of five children. Her family moved to Philadelphia, Pa., where she was educated in the Philadelphia Public School System. She attended and graduated from Cheney State University. Her professional career was spent in the Caroline County Public School System as an elementary school teacher. She retired after 28 years of dedicated service. Mrs. Truxon enjoyed spending time with Club Merry-Go-Round, a group of childhood friends who spent over fifty years traveling, attending Broadway plays, and promoting good will for children. She was a member of the Car-Kent-Tal-Dor-Que Business and Professional Women's Club. She was a volunteered on the Maryland Foster Care Review Board for ten years. She enjoyed traveling the tri-state area playing bingo for thirty years. Mrs. Truxon was a dedicated member of Union Bethel AME Church. As a longtime church member, she held the following positions: Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Pro Temp of the Stewardesses, Senior Choir Member, Lay Organization Member, and Missionary Auxiliary Member. Artis met and married Earl Truxon Sr., who preceded her in death. From this union, they were blessed with four children Earl Jr., McKinley, Gloria, and Trube. She leaves to cherish her memory, four children, Earl J. Truxon Jr., of Greensboro, Md., McKinley R. Truxon and his wife Gail, of Dover, Gloria D. Bailey and husband Samuel, of Newark, and Trube T. Truxon and his deceased wife Lou Ann, of Denton, Md.; step-daughter, Sandra Mitchell, of Camden, N.J.; four grandchildren, Aaron Hutt, of Denton, Md., Cheryl L. Battle, of Wilmington, Reginald Truxon, of Hampton, Va., and Adrienne C. Bailey, of Newark; one great-grandson, Jordan L. Frasier, of Wilmington; two sisters-in-law, Gladys Davis, of Williamstown, N.J., and Martina Ford, of White Plains, N.Y.; cousins, Naomi Funderburg, of Philadelphia, Pa., and Henry Lee Bowman, of El Entroca, Calif.; and a host of other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 at Union Bethel A.M.E. Church, 509 Lincoln St., Denton, MD 21629. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Burial will be immediately following the service at Spring Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Mrs. Truxon to Union Bethel A.M.E. Church Building Maintenance Fund, P.O. Box 542, Denton, MD 21629. Arrangements by Bennie Smith Funeral Home.
