GOP congressman from Wisconsin swims to safety after plane makes emergency landing in a lake
SUMMARY: A Republican congressman says he had to swim to safety after a plane he was traveling in made an emergency landing in a lake late Saturday. U.S. Rep. Tom Tiffany says he was returning from the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner when the light aircraft lost power as it approached Wausau Downtown Airport. The pilot made an emergency landing in Lake Wausau. They both ended up in the water and swam to safety. Emergency responders got both Tiffany and the pilot to a nearby hospital, where they were treated for minor injuries. Tiffany is running for governor on the Republican ticket in Wisconsin and has been endorsed by President Donald Trump.

Police say more arrests coming in death of Mississippi woman found hanging from tree
SUMMARY: Mississippi police say they were still investigating the death of Tasia Fortune, a Black woman found hanging from a tree last month, a day after a man was arrested in connection with the killing. Police did not provide an update into the investigation Saturday but said it was ongoing and more arrests were expected. Loved ones also painted a picture of Fortune as a mother, athlete and woman of faith who they hoped would not solely be remembered for her horrific death. Police say they sought and found 51-year-old Jarques Ratliff, who is Black, and arrested him in connection with the killing when they encountered him walking on the street.

The secret ballot has been an article of faith in US elections. That's being tested in Georgia
SUMMARY: There's a flaw in Georgia’s voting equipment that can allow voters to be matched to their ballots after they’ve been cast. Election security advocates are urging Georgia officials to fix the issue before the November elections. State election officials say they've taken steps to address the potential harm. But some advocates say the state isn’t going far enough. They say a fix is critical because of the rapid advance of artificial intelligence tools that can be used to exploit the flaw. Ballot secrecy is a fundamental right under the state constitution. Violations could create an opening for legal challenges.

Iranian media say 1 killed in ship strike on the Strait of Hormuz, and other Mideast developments
SUMMARY: Iranian state media say an Iranian commercial ship has been struck near the Strait of Hormuz, with one person killed. A British maritime monitor is reporting a strike on a vessel transiting the strait but with no details. Meanwhile, the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen said they fired drones and missiles toward southern Saudi Arabia, putting new pressure on a key U.S. ally in the region. The Saudis overnight said a projectile fell in al-Tawwal governorate near the border with Yemen along the Red Sea, injuring two people and damaging a mosque and several other buildings.

Swedish voters go to polls to choose a new parliament as hard right bids for role in government
SUMMARY: Voters in Sweden are heading to the polls to decide if the conservative leader stays in power or if the center-left returns. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson is seeking another term, while his predecessor hopes to reclaim the position. Experts say the campaign has been fragmented, with the focus more on forming a government than policy issues like healthcare. Kristersson leads a center-right coalition backed by the Sweden Democrats, an anti-immigration party. If reelected on Sunday, they could gain Cabinet posts for the first time. The main question is which political bloc can form a majority in the 349-seat parliament.

Fighting in Yemen intensifies, and Houthis launch more attacks on Saudi Arabia
SUMMARY: The conflict in Yemen is intensifying, as government forces launch attacks against Iran-backed Houthi rebels along the Red Sea and Houthis fire into neighboring Saudi Arabia, which supports Yemen’s government. The Yemeni government vowed Sunday to send more forces to the Red Sea coast. Last week, Houthis captured the port city of Mokha and an island on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a crucial shipping alternative to the Strait of Hormuz. The United Nations reports that over 80,000 people have been displaced in Yemen since September. The Houthis' advance puts them closer to a major U.S. base in Djibouti.

Trump has support in Doonbeg, though tiny snails have snagged his Irish golf course plans
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump's visit to Ireland has attracted protests, but in one corner of the country there is strong support. His golf resort in Doonbeg has brought jobs and tourists, making it an economic lifeline for the area. However, some locals and environmentalists oppose his plans, such as a new ballroom they say could harm protected snails. Protests erupted during his visit, with some criticizing his policies on immigration and the environment. While many in Doonbeg support the resort for its economic benefits, others feel conflicted about Trump's influence. Despite the protests, many believe their voices aren't being heard.

SUMMARY: U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to halt strikes on Russian diesel, saying attacks are causing a global shortage. Saudi Arabia has few options as it faces mounting threats from Iran and its allies
SUMMARY: Houthi rebels in Yemen are advancing toward a crucial trade chokepoint. Attacks blamed on Iraqi militias forced the closure of a major pipeline. Iran and its allies are unleashing a nightmare scenario for Saudi Arabia and unsettling global markets. Control over the Bab el-Mandeb Strait could allow the Iran-backed rebels to cut off another major export route for Saudi oil as Iran disrupts the Strait of Hormuz. The Saudis could use U.S. support to fight back. But President Donald Trump seems reluctant to widen an already unpopular and stalemated war in the Middle East.

Benin bets on turning its cotton crop into clothes at home
SUMMARY: The fabrics made by Fatoumata Dosso carry the tag “Made in Benin.” They are words that she proudly pondered one afternoon. Her fabrics represent an ambition much bigger than her fashion business: keeping more of the value of Africa’s largest cotton producer at home. The Beninese founder of DAF Collection says the tag means her country is trying to take full advantage of the abundant raw material produced in Benin. The country is Africa’s top cotton producer. Dosso is responding to government policy that discourages export of raw material and stipulates the West African country must do more to export finished products.

Inside a Philadelphia barbershop, Black men debate their political past and future
SUMMARY: Political strategist Khalil Thompson is on a mission to understand why some Black men leaned Republican in recent elections. His organization, Win With Black Men, aims to address this by engaging in conversations across the country. Thompson recently organized a discussion at a Philadelphia barbershop to explore Black men's political views. Although Black men typically vote Democrat, even small shifts in their support can impact elections. The discussion touched on topics such as role models, education, and economic opportunities. Thompson believes Black men are more likely to support candidates with inspirational messages rather than pessimistic ones.
