SUMMARY: A Twin Falls city spokesman says that three people were killed and seven more were injured, some critically, in a shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in southern Idaho on Saturday afternoon. Eastern Washington fires have burned 600 structures and forced the evacuation of 5,000 homes
SUMMARY: Authorities say about 5,000 homes have been evacuated and about 600 homes, businesses and other buildings have been destroyed by wildfires that remained uncontained Sunday in eastern Washington state. The fires burned more than 8.2 square miles around Spokane, the second largest city in Washington, and were among dozens across the western U.S. The number of fires has stretched the ability of federal, state and local agencies to fight them. No deaths have yet been reported from the fires in the Spokane area. A spokesperson for the federal response team tackling the fires and said wind gusts from 35 miles per hour and 45 miles per hour were expected Sunday.

Republicans want voters to elect Kansas Supreme Court justices and move court to the right
SUMMARY: Kansas voters will decide Tuesday whether to elect state Supreme Court justices rather than have the governor appoint them. It's a push from conservatives who have chafed for years over court decisions they disagreed with on issues such as abortion, school funding and the death penalty. Supporters call it a pro-democracy change, and they’re hoping elections move the court to the right. A review of current and past constitutions shows that the last one to be amended with a similar change was Mississippi's in 1914. Critics say the move would make the court more partisan and less independent.

'Today' show host Savannah Guthrie begs for 'someone to come forward' in her mother's disappearance
SUMMARY: “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie said her family was “desperate” and “begging for help" in the disappearance of her mother. The emotional plea Saturday on her Instagram account came a day after authorities released an early ransom note in the investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie. A second note that was also released Friday said Guthrie died shortly after she was kidnapped and “is buried in nature now.” Both notes initially were sent to a Tucson television station days after Guthrie's 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing from her home outside Tucson on Feb. 1. Authorities have not said whether Nancy Guthrie is still alive.

Why immigration remains strong for Trump among Republicans, according to a new AP-NORC poll
SUMMARY: A new AP-NORC poll finds that immigration remains a relative strength for President Donald Trump, even after three people were killed in encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in the span of under a week in July. Only 39% of U.S. adults approve of his performance on the issue, but that includes 81% of Republicans, whose views on Trump's handling of immigration have remained stable since last summer despite a year of aggressive immigration enforcement actions. That’s a contrast with views of his handling of Iran, where he’s seen more recent signs of slippage, even among his own supporters.

Sen. Bernie Moreno says former son-in-law Max Miller should not serve in the House
SUMMARY: U.S. Sen. Bernie Moreno says his former son-in-law, U.S Rep. Max Miller, should not be serving in the House and should “seek professional help” as Miller defended himself against allegations of domestic abuse. Moreno has been restrained in recent months as the bitter custody dispute played out between Miller and the senator’s daughter Emily. But he said in a lengthy post Sunday that “If there are any basic standards of character required to hold elected office, Max Miller fails them. He should not serve in the House of Representatives.” Miller defended himself against allegations of domestic abuse in a live video on X Sunday.

Ken Martin hunkers down at the Democratic National Committee as a storm gathers around party leader
SUMMARY: National Democratic Party Chair Ken Martin is said to be in survival mode. That’s how people close to the embattled leader describe his mindset as he navigates a storm of frustration from within the party heading into the November elections. Calls for Martin's resignation are growing louder among Democratic operatives. They're concerned about Martin's fundraising performance and his leadership decisions, among other things. Martin is avoiding media appearances. He's monitoring his critics’ social media posts. And he's refused so far to adopt any meaningful changes. The situation threatens to undermine the party’s momentum in the fight against President Donald Trump’s Republican Party for control of Congress this fall.

Trump blasts Pirro after she refutes his claim that Reflecting Pool was damaged by vandals
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is sharply criticizing U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro after her assessment that damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following a recent renovation was caused by shoddy construction rather than vandals. On Friday, Pirro moved to drop charges against former Olympian David Hearn, accused of vandalizing the pool. Trump argued anew on Saturday that the damage was caused by vandals. But Pirro, a Trump appointee, said in a court filing that the damage was due to a botched installation of a new liner ahead of the America 250 celebrations. Trump also posted a video on Saturday that he claims shows vandalism, but the footage is unclear.

SUMMARY: Democrats are seeing a fresh opportunity for an upset in a northeast Ohio congressional seat. The Republican incumbent is facing mounting pressure over domestic abuse allegations in a bitter and drawn-out dispute with his ex-wife. The allegations against the congressman, Max Miller, have been public for years. But they've recently drawn increased media scrutiny.
