Some of the skydivers killed in Missouri plane crash were experienced jumpers
SUMMARY: Several of the skydivers who were killed when their plane crashed moments after taking off from a Missouri airfield had jumped before. Authorities say the pilot and all 11 passengers died in the crash Sunday in Butler, Missouri. One friend said that while the victims were all different in almost every way, those who died were part of a community with a unique bond. Kevin Payne says he had jumped with seven of the skydivers who were on the plane. Authorities say some family members of those who died were at the airport to watch the jump and witnessed the crash.

Mayhem mars euphoria as New York City celebrates the Knicks' first championship in 53 years
SUMMARY: It was bedlam on Broadway as the New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in 53 years, with exuberant celebrations marred by mayhem and violence, including a shooting in Times Square. Outside the team’s Manhattan arena, Madison Square Garden, fans roared as the Knicks rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat the Spurs in San Antonio in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Saturday night. Soon after, rowdy fans were clashing with police, smashing windows on a police car, climbing scaffolding, light poles and a statue, standing atop school buses in Times Square and trying to hitch a ride on a moving fire truck. The NYPD said there were multiple arrests but wouldn’t have a total until later on Sunday.

Trump celebrates 80th birthday with an Iran deal and UFC cage fights at the White House
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has celebrated turning 80 by announcing a preliminary agreement to end the war and a UFC cage-fighting event on the White House lawn. Trump suggested before the fights that a deal with Tehran means the U.S. will lift its blockade and that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen. However, crucial details remain unresolved. The UFC event, which is also part of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, featured seven fights and thousands of spectators. Trump is a master of political diversion, though, and the event can be seen as a deliberate distraction from rising gas prices and the president's low approval ratings.

Georgia's vote-counting method will soon be banned. Lawmakers will try to find a fix this week
SUMMARY: Georgia lawmakers are expected to try to clean up an election mess of their own making when they return to the Capitol this week for a special session. The election system used throughout the political battleground state relies on a QR code printed on ballots to tally the votes. Legislators passed a law two years ago barring the use of that barcode for the official vote count beyond July 1 of this year, but no replacement method of tabulating votes was ever implemented. Meanwhile, the secretary of state’s office and the State Election Board have further muddied the waters by issuing conflicting guidance about how votes should be cast and counted.

In Georgia, Senate hopeful Mike Collins celebrates being Trump's latest 'MAGA' pick in GOP primaries
SUMMARY: In the closing stretch of Georgia’s Republican U.S. Senate runoff, Rep. Mike Collins is celebrating his 11th-hour endorsement from Donald Trump. Collins on Sunday dismissed any ideas that the Republican president’s stamp of approval is a risky bet in a potential showdown with Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff in November. Trump disclosed his choice of Collins over former football coach Derek Dooley in a middle-of-the-night social media post that praised the second-term congressman for his loyalty. The Republican candidates are competing Tuesday for the chance to unseat Ossoff in one of the most closely watched campaigns in the November midterm elections. Dooley, a political newcomer, is backed by outgoing Gov. Brian Kemp, who has clashed with Trump in the past.

Alabama's GOP dismisses a residency challenge to Tuberville's bid for Alabama governor
SUMMARY: The Alabama Republican Party says U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville will remain the party’s gubernatorial nominee. The party's steering committee rejected an accusation that he has not lived in the state long enough to run for governor. The challenge was filed by Tuberville’s former primary opponent, Ken McFeeters. Tuberville's campaign says tax records show he established residency in 2018. McFeeters has pointed to Tuberville's Florida ties, including a multimillion-dollar beach home. The dispute revives similar accusations raised when Tuberville ran for Senate in 2020.

Iran and US reach an initial deal to end the war and open the Strait of Hormuz but challenges remain
SUMMARY: The United States and Iran have reached an initial agreement that would extend their shaky ceasefire and lead to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. But significant challenges remain to ending the war, including whether Israel will continue its offensive in Lebanon. Details of the deal were not immediately released, but it appeared that it would not be implemented until it is signed. Mediator Pakistan said that would happen Friday in Geneva. Even if the strait fully opens then, it will likely take months for the global energy crisis sparked by its closure to ease. Israel’s defense minister said Monday that the country wouldn’t withdraw from land seized in Lebanon.

UK bans under-16s from using social media apps including TikTok and YouTube
SUMMARY: Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain will ban children under 16 from using social media apps like Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube from early next year. The announcement on Monday aims to protect young people from harmful content and excessive screen time. Starmer acknowledges that some teens might bypass the ban but emphasizes the importance of children's safety and happiness. YouTube and Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, warned that a blanket social media restriction could push kids into unregulated online spaces. The ban aligns with global efforts to enhance online safety for children.

What to know about the finalized deal to end the Iran war
SUMMARY: The United States and Iran have reached a tentative deal to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The deal has been brokered mainly by Pakistan. Pakistani officials say the deal starts with the simultaneous lifting of Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and the U.S. blockade of Iran’s ports. The two sides will then enter 60 days of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and the potential lifting of sanctions. The officials spoke anonymously because the text is being kept confidential. Still much remains unknown, however, including whether the deal says anything about Iran’s missile program and the fighting in Lebanon. There are plans to sign the agreement Friday in Switzerland.

SUMMARY: The Congolese Ministry of Health reports that confirmed Ebola cases in Congo have increased to 782, with 181 deaths. The outbreak, declared on May 15, is caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, which lacks an approved vaccine or treatment. The situation is worsened by attacks on health workers, skepticism among locals and ongoing armed conflict. The outbreak is concentrated in the eastern Ituri province, accounting for over 90% of cases, and has spread to North and South Kivu provinces and Uganda. Challenges in contact tracing arise from the frequent movement of displaced people and artisanal miners in the region.

How AAPI adults are being affected by Trump's immigration crackdown, according to a new poll
SUMMARY: A new AP-NORC/AAPI Data poll finds that most Asian American and Pacific Islander adults have experienced or witnessed some degree of upheaval because of the Trump administration’s heightened immigration policies. A majority also say the U.S. used to be a great country for immigrants, but is not anymore. The findings come after more than a year of immigration crackdowns. The poll indicates that the Trump administration's aggressive approach may be changing the way some see the U.S. itself. Even with a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, it could take weeks or months for oil to fully flow
SUMMARY: The tentative agreement to end the war in Iran and reopen the Strait of Hormuz would be good news for the global economy. But oil won't simply start flowing through the key shipping artery the way it did before the war. Then, it carried a fifth of the world's crude. Now, it will take time for hundreds of ships trapped in the Persian Gulf to exit through the narrow strait. And Gulf oil producers that throttled back production will need time to get oil moving again. And ship captains may take their time deciding it's safe and that the threat of attack from Iran has truly receded.

World Cup racism monitor urges FIFA to remove match official over hand gesture on TV broadcast

In 2019 the gesture was designated as a hate symbol by the New York-based Anti-Defamation League.
