Illinois voters pick a new generation of Democrats for House, Senate after near-record retirements

SUMMARY: Illinois voters are deciding primaries for six open U.S. House and Senate seats that will spur a new generation of leadership in the state’s heavily Democratic congressional delegation. The retirement of Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin has triggered a competitive campaign to replace him. Among the candidates in Tuesday's Democratic primary are two sitting House members and the lieutenant governor. Furious fundraising and sharp elbows have marked the race. It is also a test of the influence of Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker. House retirements have led to open seats across the Chicago area. The stakes are high with most primary winners in the Democratic stronghold expected to win in November.

Some flight cancellations and delays continue after US storms dump snow in the Midwest and head east

SUMMARY: Hundreds of flights are canceled or delayed one day after powerful storms swept across the eastern half of the country and disrupted thousands of others. The flight-tracking site FlightAware says nearly 900 flights scheduled to fly into, out of or within the U.S. have been called off as of early Tuesday, It says nearly 1,800 have been delayed. Travelers have been facing additional jams at airport security checkpoints as a partial government shutdown strains screener staffing. The disruptions come at an already challenging time for air travel, in part because the shutdown that began Feb. 14 has pressured staffing at some security checkpoints.

A Utah woman who wrote a book on grief after husband's death found guilty of murdering him

SUMMARY: A Utah woman has been convicted of aggravated murder after poisoning her husband with fentanyl and then self-publishing a children’s book about coping with grief. Jurors on Monday also found Kouri Richins guilty of fraudulently claiming insurance benefits after the death of Eric Richins in March 2022 at their home outside the ski town of Park City. Prosecutors say Kouri Richins slipped five times the lethal dose of the synthetic opioid into a cocktail that he drank. Winds, blizzards and triple-digit heat put over half of the US in the path of extreme weather

SUMMARY: Extreme weather conditions from coast to coast put more than half the U.S. in the path of rough conditions. Airport delays and cancellations piled up Monday in some of the nation’s largest airports, with more than 4,700 canceled across the U.S. Many schools closed early in the mid-Atlantic states, where high winds were in the forecast. Blizzards buried parts of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota while torrential rains flooded homes and washed out roads in Hawaii. California and Arizona are dealing with unusually high temperatures for this time of year that are likely stretch throughout the rest of the week. Leqaa Kordia is a 33-year-old from the West Bank who has lived in New Jersey since 2016. She had been held in a U.S. immigration detention center in Texas since last March. Kordia was among roughly 100 people arrested outside Columbia University during protests at the school in 2024. 3,800 workers strike at one of the largest meatpacking plants in the US

SUMMARY: About 3,800 workers for the world’s largest meatpacking company began striking Monday. If they don’t get a new contract soon, already costly beef could become even more expensive for U.S. consumers. The walkout at the Swift Beef Co. plant in Greeley, Colorado, comes after the union said 99% of the workers voted to authorize the strike, seeking higher wages and better health care. Swift Beef owner JBS USA says it complies with labor and employment laws and any employee who doesn’t strike will have work and be paid. Union officials say the company's offer of 2% wage hikes is less than inflation. The company says its offer is fair.

In announcing his resignation Tuesday, Joe Kent's claimed Iran “posed no imminent threat" to the U.S. Trump says Iran is a “tremendous threat." Kent also said it was clear the U.S. started the war “due to pressure from Israel.” The Republican president previously has denied Israel forced the U.S. to act. Trump postpones his China trip to focus on the war in Iran

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is delaying a diplomatic trip to China that was planned for months but began to unravel as he pressured Beijing and other world powers to form a military coalition to protect the vital Strait of Hormuz. Trump said Tuesday while meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in the Oval Office that he would be going to China in five or six weeks’ time instead of at the end of the month. Republicans are launching a voting bill debate that could last days or even weeks

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is issuing a warning to fellow Republicans as they launch an unprecedented effort to hold the Senate floor and talk for days about a voting bill they know can’t pass. Trump says he’ll “NEVER (EVER!)” endorse anyone who votes against the bill. Tuesday's GOP talkathon is an attempt to capture public attention on legislation requiring stricter voter registration rules. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has tried to navigate Trump’s insistence on the issue and Democrats’ united opposition. Trump has urged Thune to scrap the legislative filibuster or work around it to pass the bill. Thune says he doesn’t have the votes. Democrats say the bill would disenfranchise millions of voters.

Trump's homeland security pick Mullin is poised to inherit a department beset by challenges

SUMMARY: Senator Markwayne Mullin has a tough path as he moves toward leading the Department of Homeland Security, with immigration fights, disaster anger and Iran threats piling up. If confirmed, he'll step in after Kristi Noem’s turbulent tenure. Mullin has been a member of Congress for 13 years. As DHS secretary, he is expected to align the department with President Donald Trump's priorities. Mullin backs aggressive immigration enforcement and supports cutting funds to places that resist Immigration and Customs Enforcement. What's in the voting bill that Republicans are pushing to the Senate floor

SUMMARY: Legislation that would require proof of U.S. citizenship for new voters has become a rallying cry for President Donald Trump. The Senate will take up the bill this week. It would require voters to provide proof of citizenship when they register and to present approved identification when they go to the polls, among other new rules. Federal law already requires that voters in national elections be U.S. citizens. But the legislation would lay out strict new requirements for voters to prove their status. The bill is not expected to pass the Senate because of unified Democratic opposition. But Trump is demanding that Republicans push ahead.

Trump faces new pressure on mass deportations as Republicans weigh Homeland Security nominee

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump's decision to replace Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem gives him an opportunity to reset his mass deportation agenda — or to double down on a campaign promise. The White House's political director encouraged Republican lawmakers to focus on immigration enforcement among criminals, a pivot from the mass deportations the president ran on. House Speaker Mike Johnson says the operations have created a “hiccup” for the party. But all indications are that Trump’s mass deportation operation is not stalling out but intensifying. Iran war pushes countries into energy triage as they conserve power and curb soaring prices

Vatican appeals court declares mistrial in the 'trial of the century' against a cardinal

SUMMARY: The Vatican appeals tribunal has declared a mistrial in the Holy See’s big “trial of the century.” It’s a stunning blow to both Pope Francis’ legacy and Vatican prosecutors who had prosecuted a cardinal and several other people on alleged financial crimes. In a 16-page ruling, the appeals court ruled that Francis and Vatican prosecutors both made procedural errors that nullified the original indictment of Cardinal Angelo Becciu and required a new trial. The court set a June 22 as the date for the new trial to begin. Defense lawyers say such a ruling is enormously significant if not historic, since it amounts to a Vatican court declaring an act of the pope had no effect.
