Dr. William Foege, leader in smallpox eradication, dies
SUMMARY: Dr. William Foege, a leader in the global eradication of smallpox, has died. He was 89. Foege was director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and later held other key health leadership roles. But his greatest achievement came before all that, with his work on smallpox while he was a medical missionary in Nigeria. He and his colleagues developed a “ring containment” strategy for the disease. A smallpox outbreak was contained by identifying each case and vaccinating everyone who they might come into contact with.

Videos of deadly Minneapolis shooting contradict government statements
SUMMARY: Videos quickly emerged showing the fatal shooting of a Minneapolis protester by a Border Patrol agent that has been widely denounced as a case of excessive force carried out by untrained federal officers. The administration says it was a case of an armed man provoking violence. The Associated Press reviewed multiple bystander videos that show a Border Patrol agent shooting and killing 37-year-old Alex Pretti after a roughly 30-second scuffle on Saturday morning. The videos appear to contradict statements by the Trump administration, which said the shots were fired “defensively” against Pretti as he “approached” them with a gun. In the videos, Pretti is seen with only a phone in his hand.

Protesters demand immigration agents leave Minneapolis after man is shot and killed during crackdown
SUMMARY: Democratic officials and protesters on the streets are demanding that federal immigration officers leave Minnesota after a Border Patrol agent fatally shot a man in Minneapolis. Saturday's shooting drew hundreds of demonstrators into the frigid cold in a city already shaken by another killing weeks earlier. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara says information about what led up to the latest shooting is limited. The man has been identified by his parents as Alex Pretti. He was a 37-year-old intensive care unit nurse. The Minnesota National Guard assisted local police in monitoring the crowds.

The man killed by a US Border Patrol officer in Minneapolis was an ICU nurse, family says
SUMMARY: Family members say the man who was killed by a federal officer in Minneapolis was an intensive care nurse at a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital who cared deeply about people and was upset by President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in his city. Thirty-seven-year-old Alex Jeffrey Pretti was an avid outdoorsman who loved getting in adventures with his dog. He had participated in protests following the killing of Renee Good by a U.S. Immigration and Customs Law Enforcement officer earlier this month. Court records showed he had no criminal record. His family said he had never had any interactions with law enforcement beyond a could traffic tickets.

Democrats Crockett, Talarico align on much in Texas Senate debate. Trump impeachment is different
SUMMARY: Democrats Jasmine Crockett and James Talarici differed more on style than substance in their first debate for U.S. Senate in heavily Republican Texas. Crockett and Talarico generally echoed each other on economic issues, health care and taxes. But they distinguished themselves somewhat on the future of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and impeachment of President Donald Trump. The primary is March 3. They're running for the seat held by John Cornyn. The four-term Republican senator is facing two challengers in the GOP primary. Democrats are trying to regain a Senate majority, but Texas hasn't elected a Democrat to statewide office in 30-plus year.

Trump threatens Canada with a 100% tariff over its China trade deal and escalates feud with Carney
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is threatening to impose a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada if America’s northern neighbor goes ahead with its trade deal with China. Trump is intensifying a feud with Prime Minister Mark Carney, who's become a rising voice in the West’s pushback to Trump's new world order. Trump said in a social media post Saturday that if Carney “thinks he is going to make Canada a “Drop Off Port” for China to send goods and products into the United States, he is sorely mistaken.” It's unclear when Trump might impose the threatened tariff and the White House isn't offering additional details.

Getting to 'no': Europe's leaders find a way to speak with one voice against Trump
SUMMARY: European leaders are finding a way to speak with one voice against President Donald Trump and they're increasingly willing to say “no” to his demands. Trump's insistence on U.S. control over Greenland has sparked strong opposition from European leaders. During a showdown in Davos, Switzerland, last week, the prime ministers of Britain and Norway issued sharp warnings against Trump's threats. That European unity marks a shift from appeasing Trump to defying him, and Denmark's prime minister emphasized the importance of standing together. Trump's transactional approach to diplomacy has created a disconnect with European leaders.

How Americans are using AI at work, according to a new Gallup poll
SUMMARY: A new Gallup poll finds that American workers have adopted artificial intelligence into their work lives at a remarkable pace over the past few years. Some 12% of employed adults say they use AI daily in their job, while nearly half say they've used it at least a few times a year. That compares with 21% who were using AI at least occasionally a few years ago. The findings point to the impact of the widespread commercial boom that ChatGPT sparked for generative AI tools that can write emails and computer code, summarize long documents or help answer questions. The Gallup Workforce survey of more than 22,000 U.S. workers was conducted last fall.

Stranded by winter weather? Here’s what airlines owe you
SUMMARY: Bad weather can derail even the best-laid travel plans. When that happens, U.S. airlines must provide refunds for canceled flights. If winter weather is expected, airlines might also allow you to postpone your trip without fees. If your flight is canceled, airlines usually rebook for free, but availability can be limited during peak times. You are entitled to a full refund if you choose not to travel or find a different way to get to your destination, but airlines aren’t required to cover lodging or meals for stranded passengers. Booking a backup flight if forecasts look bad is another option because some airlines offer full refunds as long as a passenger cancels within 24 hours of booking.

Sleep-tracking devices have limits. Experts want users to know what they are
SUMMARY: Millions of people rely on wearable devices to monitor how well they're sleeping. Sleep trackers don’t necessarily measure sleep directly but instead infer states of slumber from signals like heart rate and movement. Experts say it's therefore important to understand what the devices can and cannot measure. A University of Michigan math professor who researches the science behind sleep wearables says the algorithms used by major brands are highly accurate in determining when someone is asleep and somewhat helpful for estimating sleep stages. But a neurologist at the Morehouse School of Medicine says some wearers become fixated on their sleep scores. There's even a medical term for an unhealthy obsession with ideal sleep: orthosomnia.

Protests inside churches are unusual despite long history of civil disobedience in the US
SUMMARY: American religious history is rife with protest movements. Yet political protests inside a house of worship are unusual. That is a striking aspect of a new case against anti-ICE protesters in St. Paul, Minnesota. The group disrupted a service last Sunday at Cities Church, a Southern Baptist congregation. One of its pastors works for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Three protesters have been arrested. They are charged under a federal law criminalizing any conspiracy against someone’s constitutional rights, in this case attending a worship service.
