American chess grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky dies at 29
SUMMARY: A chess grandmaster who started as a child prodigy and quickly became one of the most influential American voices in the sport has died at age 29. Daniel Naroditsky became a grandmaster at the age of 18. That's the highest title in chess aside from World Champion. The Charlotte Chess Center in North Carolina announced Naroditsky's death Monday on social media. The cause of death was not immediately known. Fellow grandmasters credited Naroditsky with introducing the sport to a wider audience by livestreaming many of his matches. Other elite chess players took to social media to express their shock and sadness.

US appeals court says Trump can take command of Oregon troops though deployment blocked for now
SUMMARY: A U.S. appeals court has ruled that President Donald Trump can take command of 200 Oregon National Guard troops. He's still barred from actually deploying those troops — at least for now. A panel from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 Monday to put on hold an order that kept Trump from taking command of the troops. Another order prohibits Trump from sending any Guard troops to Oregon at all. The administration is now asking for that order to be dissolved. Oregon's attorney general said he would ask a broader appeals court panel to reconsider the ruling.

Anti-science bills hit statehouses, stripping away public health protections built over a century
SUMMARY: More than 420 anti-science bills attacking longstanding public health protections – vaccines, milk safety and fluoride – have been introduced in statehouses across the U.S. this year. It's part of an organized, politically savvy campaign to enshrine a conspiracy theory-driven agenda into law. An Associated Press investigation found that the wave of legislation has cropped up in most states, pushed by people with close ties to Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Around 30 have been enacted or adopted. The effort would strip away protections that have been built over a century and are integral to American lives and society.

US man arrested in Scotland and convicted of Utah rape gets at least 5 years in prison
SUMMARY: A U.S. man authorities say faked his death and fled to the United Kingdom to avoid rape charges has been sentenced to at least five years in prison. Utah allows sentences to be given as a range of possible prison time. Judge Barry Lawrence sentenced Nicholas Rossi on Monday to as much as life in prison, the longest possible sentence. Authorities doubted an online obituary that claimed Rossi died in 2020 and he was arrested in the UK. A parole board will decide when Rossi is released on his first of two convictions for raping two Utah women in 2008. Sentencing in the other case is set for Nov. 4.

Man who planned to shoot up Atlanta's airport is arrested in a terminal following a tip, police say
SUMMARY: Police have arrested a man accused of threatening to open fire at the world’s busiest airport in Atlanta and say an assault rifle was found in his car. Police said at a news conference Monday that 49-year-old Billy Joe Cagle, of Cartersville, Georgia, had described his plan during a social media livestream. Atlanta's police chief says the man's family notified Cartersville police, who relayed the information to his department. He says officers found an AR-15 and 27 rounds of ammunition in Cagle's pickup truck after taking him into custody Monday in the domestic flights terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Mayor Andre Dickens said “we’re thankful to God” that a tragedy was averted.

ICE would need more money to expand use of bodycams in Chicago crackdown, official says
SUMMARY: Officials say many federal officers involved in immigration enforcement in Chicago have body cameras, but expanding their use requires more funding from Congress. The issue was discussed at a hearing Monday about the tactics used in the Trump administration's crackdown in Chicago, which has led to over 1,000 arrests. U.S. District Judge Sara Ellis has ordered agents to wear cameras during arrests and searches. Officials testified about the operation and complaints of aggressive tactics. The hearing is part of a lawsuit by news organizations and community groups. The government denies any wrongdoing, saying officers have faced attacks while enforcing federal law.

What to know about the murder trial of an Illinois sheriff deputy who killed Sonya Massey
SUMMARY: Jury selection has begun in the first-degree murder trial of a former Illinois sheriff's deputy in the death of Sonya Massey. Sean Grayson faces a first-degree murder charge for fatally shooting Massey, a 36-year-old Black woman who had mental health problems, in her Springfield home after she called 911 for help. Massey died July 6, 2024. She was unarmed but a confrontation with Grayson over her removing a pan of hot water from the stove prompted him to shoot her. The 31-year-old Grayson had problems in past law enforcement jobs and critics questioned why he was hired. The trial was moved to Peoria because of pretrial publicity.

Appellate judges question moves to keep Alina Habba in place as top New Jersey prosecutor
SUMMARY: Federal appeals court judges questioned the Trump administration’s maneuvers to keep the president’s former lawyer, Alina Habba, in place as New Jersey’s top federal prosecutor. The three-judge panel of the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals sitting in Philadelphia didn’t immediately issue a ruling after the arguments. The hearing was attended in person by Habba, who sat in front of the judges during the proceeding. The hearing is the most recent development in President Donald Trump’s administration’s effort to keep his preferred candidate in the role of U.S. attorney for New Jersey, a powerful post that oversees criminal and civil law enforcement.

Senate Republicans head to the White House in a show of unity as the shutdown enters its fourth week
SUMMARY: As the government shutdown enters its fourth week, Senate Republicans are heading to the White House — not for urgent talks on how to end it but for a display of unity with President Donald Trump as they refuse to negotiate on any Democratic demands. But Senate Democrats also are expressing confidence in their strategy to keep voting against a House-passed bill that would reopen the government until Trump and other Republicans engage them. Democrats want to extend health care subsidies that are expiring. GOP Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming tells Fox News Channel the message during lunch Tuesday will be, “Republicans are united.” Barrasso says he expects Trump to say, “Stand strong.”

US and Australia sign critical-minerals agreement as a way to counter China
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have signed a critical-minerals deal at the White House. The United States is eyeing Australia's rare-earth resources as China imposes stricter export rules on its critical minerals. Monday's White House meeting comes after Beijing announced this month that foreign companies must get approval to export magnets with rare-earth materials from China. Trump administration officials say this gives China control over the tech supply chain. The two leaders also discussed a security pact among Australia, the U.S. and the United Kingdom that was signed during Joe Biden’s administration. Trump noted that AUKUS was established “a while ago” but that the agreement now is “moving along very rapidly, very well.”

Comey's lawyers say case against him is driven by Trump's 'personal animus' and must be thrown out
SUMMARY: Lawyers for former FBI Director James Comey are urging a judge to dismiss the case against him. In court papers Monday, they called it a vindictive prosecution motivated by “personal animus” and orchestrated by a White House determined to seek retribution against a perceived foe of President Donald Trump. The lawyers separately called for the indictment’s dismissal because of what they said was the illegitimate appointment of the U.S. attorney who filed the case days after being hastily named to the job by Trump. The double-barrel attack on the indictment, which accuses Comey of lying to Congress five years ago, represents the opening salvo in what is expected to be a protracted court fight ahead of a trial currently set for Jan. 5.

But he says he's also unconcerned about the “pearl clutching” of critics upset that President Donald Trump granted him clemency. Speaking on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Santos said Sunday that if Trump “had pardoned Jesus Christ off the cross, he would have had critics.” Santos won office after inventing a bogus persona as a Wall Street dealmaker. Trump suggests US will buy Argentine beef to bring down prices for American consumers

The Republican president told reporters aboard Air Force One during a flight Sunday from Florida to Washington that "If we do that, that will bring our beef prices down.” Trump promised days earlier to address the issue as part of his efforts to keep inflation in check. Japan's parliament elects Sanae Takaichi as nation's first female prime minister
SUMMARY: Japan's parliament has elected Sanae Takaichi as the country’s first female prime minister. On Tuesday, she replaced Shigeru Ishiba, ending a three-month political vacuum. Takaichi's ultraconservative stance includes supporting male-only imperial succession and opposing same-sex marriage. Despite pledging to increase female representation, she appointed only two women to her Cabinet. Her leadership comes as the Liberal Democratic Party forms a coalition with the right-wing Japan Innovation Party. This alliance, however, lacks a majority in both houses of parliament, posing challenges for her government. Takaichi faces the task of addressing economic issues and maintaining stable international relations.

Appeals court overturns conviction of Colombian ex-President Uribe for bribery and witness tampering
SUMMARY: An appeals court has overturned the conviction of Colombian ex-President Álvaro Uribe for bribery and witness tampering. Uribe, 73, has denied any wrongdoing. He was sentenced to 12 years in house arrest in August following a nearly six-month trial in which prosecutors presented evidence that he attempted to influence witnesses who accused the law-and-order leader of having links to a paramilitary group in the 1990s. In the appeal, his lawyers questioned the validity of the evidence and argued that the former president’s responsibility was not “unequivocally” proven. Prosecutors can appeal Tuesday’s ruling to Colombia’s Supreme Court.

Thick, hazardous smog blankets New Delhi after Diwali fireworks
SUMMARY: Thick smog is blanketing New Delhi after Diwali celebrations with fireworks sent air pollution levels soaring. Revelers burst firecrackers late into Monday night, filling the air with smoke and fine particles. By Tuesday morning, air quality in several neighborhoods ranked as severe. Last week, India’s top court eased a ban on firecrackers, allowing limited use of “green firecrackers” that emit fewer pollutants. Pollution spikes due to firecrackers are common after Diwali, which coincides with cooler weather and crop residue fires. Advice to feed babies peanuts early and often helped thousands of kids avoid allergies
SUMMARY: A study that upended medical practice by recommending feeding babies peanut products early to prevent allergies has had a big effect in the real world. A new study in the medical journal Pediatrics found that peanut allergies in children ages 0 to 3 declined by more than 27% after guidance was first issued, and by more than 40% after it was expanded in 2017. For decades, doctors had recommended delaying feeding children peanuts and other foods likely to trigger allergies until age 3. Government shutdown imperils dozens of Head Start preschool programs
SUMMARY: Head Start programs that serve tens of thousands of the nation’s neediest preschoolers are facing a cutoff of federal funding at the end of the month because of the government shutdown. That would leave many programs scrambling to figure out how to keep their doors open. The early education initiative is funded almost entirely by the federal government, making it particularly vulnerable to funding disruptions. The programs are run by schools, local governments and nonprofits. The programs receive new grants annually and are not allowed to carry over unspent money.
