Tennessee governor says more federal agents to join fight against crime in Memphis next week
SUMMARY: For two weeks, Memphis has been bracing for an influx of National Guard troops after President Donald Trump announced his intention to deploy them to the city. On Friday, residents finally learned more about that plan. Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee says additional federal law enforcement agents will focus on crime in Memphis starting next week. The Republican said at a news conference in Memphis alongside city and state officials that 13 federal agencies will arrive in phases, including the National Guard. He said the National Guard members will not make arrests and will not be armed unless local law enforcement officials request it. He says he will not declare a state of emergency.

Assata Shakur, a fugitive Black militant sought by the US since 1979, dies in Cuba
SUMMARY: Assata Shakur, a Black liberation activist who was given political asylum in Cuba after her 1979 escape from a U.S. prison where she had been serving a life sentence for killing a police officer, has died. The Cuban government said Friday that Shakur died Thursday in Havana due to “health conditions and advanced age.” Shakur’s case had long been a thorny issue in the fraught relations between the U.S. and Cuba. Shakur was convicted in the 1973 death of Trooper Werner Foerster during a gunfight after a traffic stop on the New Jersey Turnpike. She was sentenced to life in prison but escaped and eventually fled to Cuba.

LA County response to deadly fires slowed by lack of resources, outdated alert process, report says
SUMMARY: A lack of resources and an outdated emergency alert process led to delays in warning residents about the need to evacuate as flames began consuming neighborhoods during the deadly Los Angeles wildfires in January. That's according to an outside report commissioned by Los Angeles County supervisors after the Eaton and Palisades fires killed more than 30 people and destroyed thousands of homes. The report released Thursday says a series of weaknesses, including “outdated policies, inconsistent practices and communications vulnerabilities,” hampered the effectiveness of the county’s response. The county says it's not intended to investigate or assess blame.

Man who fired on ICE facility hated US government, sought to kill federal agents, officials say
SUMMARY: The gunman who opened fire on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas hated the U.S. government and wanted to incite terror by killing federal agents. That's according to authorities, who held a news conference Thursday offering the first hint of a motive in the attack. Citing handwritten notes found at his suburban home, officials said 29-year-old Joshua Jahn set out to ambush the agency and then fatally shot himself following the assault. The shooting at daybreak Wednesday targeted the ICE office building, including a van in a gated entryway that held detainees. One detainee was killed, and two others were critically wounded. No ICE personnel were hurt.

Judge plans speedy ruling on whether charges can be dropped against Sean 'Diddy' Combs
SUMMARY: A federal judge says he'll rule soon whether to toss out two prostitution-related charges that Sean “Diddy” Combs was convicted of in July. Judge Arun Subramanian listened Thursday to nearly 90 minutes of arguments by lawyers over whether the charges were properly brought against the Grammy-winning hip-hop producer. He seemed skeptical of the defense arguments. Combs is scheduled to be sentenced next week in Manhattan federal court. After Thursday's hearing, Combs blew kisses to his mother, three daughters and three sons, telling them that every hour was getting him closer to freedom. The 55-year-old has been jailed for nearly 13 months.

Texas man executed for the 'exorcism' killing of his girlfriend's 13-month-old daughter
SUMMARY: A Texas man has been executed for killing his girlfriend’s 13-month-old daughter in a torturous ordeal the couple said was part of an “exorcism” to expel a demon from the child’s body. Blaine Milam received a lethal injection Thursday evening at the state penitentiary in Huntsville. He was condemned for the December 2008 hammer beating of Amora Carson at his East Texas trailer. Prosecutors said Milam savagely beat, bit and strangled the girl over 30 hours. Milam had blamed the killing on the girl's mother, who was convicted of murder for helping Milam and given life in prison without possibility of parole.

Former Hurricane Gabrielle threatens the Azores with heavy rain and storm surge
SUMMARY: The former Hurricane Gabrielle is expected to bring heavy rain, high winds and a storm surge to the Azores islands despite forecasters downgrading the system. The National Hurricane Center in Miami says Thursday that Gabrielle is a post-tropical cyclone, but still on track to bring dangerous impacts to the volcanic archipelago. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Humberto is gaining strength to the east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. A tropical wave to the west of Humberto caused flooding in the Caribbean and is putting the southeastern United States on alert for possible impacts. In the Pacific Ocean, Hurricane Narda could bring rough surf and rip currents to coastal areas of Mexico.

Trump escalates retribution campaign with charges against Comey and threats against liberal groups
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump’s unprecedented retribution campaign against his perceived political enemies has reached new heights as his Justice Department brings criminal charges against a longtime foe and he expands his efforts to classify certain liberal groups as “domestic terrorist organizations." Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted by a grand jury Thursday and accused of lying to Congress in a hastily brought case days after the Republican president publicly demanded action. Hours earlier, Trump signed a memorandum directing his administration to target backers of what he dubbed “left-wing terrorism” as he alleged without evidence a vast conspiracy by nonprofit groups and activists to finance violent protests. Comey says he's innocent.

Ex-FBI Director James Comey indicted after Trump pushes for prosecution of longtime foe
SUMMARY: James Comey has been charged with making a false statement to Congress and obstruction of a criminal proceeding. The charges come in a criminal case filed days after President Donald Trump appeared to urge his attorney general to prosecute the former FBI director and other perceived political enemies. The indictment Thursday makes Comey the first former senior government official to face prosecution in connection with one of Trump’s chief grievances: the long-concluded investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Trump hosts Turkey's Erdogan as the US considers lifting a ban on F-35 sales to the NATO ally
SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has held talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the White House, and he's indicating the U.S. might soon lift its hold on advanced fighter jet sales to the NATO ally. During Trump’s first term, the U.S. removed Turkey from the F-35 program because of concerns over Turkey's use of Russia's S-400 missile defense system. SUMMARY: Amazon has reached a historic $2.5 billion settlement with the Federal Trade Commission which said the online giant tricked customers into signing up for its Prime memberships, and made it difficult to cancel after they did so. The Seattle company will pay $1 billion in civil penalties — the largest fine in FTC history, and $1.5 billion will be paid to consumers who were unintentionally enrolled in Prime, or were deterred from canceling their subscriptions.

Wall Street stumbles toward a 3rd straight loss
SUMMARY: Wall Street is heading toward a rare three-day losing streak. The S&P 500 slipped 1% Thursday and was on track for its longest losing streak in more than a month. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 320 points, and the Nasdaq composite fell 1.2%. All three indexes are still near their records set at the start of the week. Stocks felt pressure from strong economic reports that could make the Federal Reserve less likely to cut interest rates in the coming months. CarMax tumbled after reporting a weaker profit for the latest quarter than analysts expected.

Hurricane Helene hit the reset button on one town’s goal of becoming an outdoor tourism mecca
SUMMARY: The mountain “gateway” town of Old Fort, North Carolina, was well on its way to achieving a major goal: to become a hot spot for mountain biking and all things outdoors. Then nature, as one business owner put it, hit “the reset button.” A year ago, floodwaters from the remnants of Hurricane Helene inundated the town, washing out miles of multi-purpose trails and closing long stretches of the Blue Ridge Parkway, a tourist lifeline. Chad Schoenauer has reopened his Old Fort Bike Shop, but he’s doing more repairs than sales these days. Tourism spending last year was way off in the mountains, but many are hoping for a successful fall foliage season to hit the reset button again.

Humberto becomes a hurricane in the Atlantic as Gabrielle moves away from the Azores
SUMMARY: Forecasters say Hurricane Humberto has formed in the Atlantic Ocean but is not currently threatening land and the former Hurricane Gabrielle is moving away from the Azores. Humberto is about 465 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands and is moving slowly toward the northwest. The center of Gabrielle, now a post-tropical cyclone, moved away from the Azores and the hurricane warning for the entire Portuguese archipelago was discontinued. Forecasters expect a tropical wave near Hispaniola and eastern Cuba to become a tropical depression near the Bahamas over the weekend. In the Pacific Ocean, Hurricane Narda is churning as a Category 1 storm but could regain strength to Category 2.

Jon Rahm won his fifth straight foursomes match and Europe had a 3-1 lead after the opening session. The notorious Bethpage Black crowd has been mostly silent because the scoreboard has been filled with European blue points. The Europeans won the first three matches with ease. None reached the 16th hole. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele saved the Americans from another opening session shutout when they won the anchor match just as President Donald Trump was arriving.
