SUMMARY: President Donald Trump is taking a break from the pressures of the Iran conflict and its economic fallout by heading to his golf resort in Doonbeg, Ireland. After commemorating the 25th anniversary of 9/11, Trump plans to attend the Irish Open golf tournament. He’ll meet with Irish leaders and U.S. embassy staff before hitting the links. CAR--F1-SPANISH GP

Antonelli leads practice on new Madring track as F1’s Spanish GP returns to Madrid

SUMMARY: Kimi Antonelli has kept his momentum on the challenging new Madring track and led the the way in practice in the return of Formula 1’s Spanish Grand Prix to Madrid. Antonelli is the points leader and is coming off an epic comeback win in Monza. He set the fastest time at the hybrid Madring that proved difficult but didn’t yield too many major incidents on the first day of racing in the capital. Arvid Lindblad’s crash prompted the first red flag of the weekend. He lost control of his Racing Bull on a turn and hit the barriers.

FBN--49ERS-ANALYSIS

The 49ers make their case as a contender with season-opening 27-7 win over the Rams

SUMMARY: In the nearly seven months since the San Francisco 49ers last played a game that counted, they watched the Seattle Seahawks celebrate a Super Bowl win in the Niners’ home locker room and the Los Angeles Rams get all the hype after an offseason that featured the addition of Myles Garrett. While San Francisco’s NFC West rivals may have gotten lots of the hype, the Niners showed in the season opener that they might also belong on the short list of Super Bowl contenders after beating the Rams 27-7 in the season opener in Australia.

HKN--RED WINGS-LARKIN

Red Wings strip Dylan Larkin of captaincy after trade request but say he’ll be at training camp

SUMMARY: Dylan Larkin is expected to be on the ice for the start of Detroit Red Wings training camp next week. But he is no longer their captain after asking for a trade this past spring. The team announced Friday it had stripped Larkin of the “C” he wore on his jersey for the past six seasons. Larkin asked former general manager Steve Yzerman for a trade after Detroit failed to make the playoffs for an active NHL-record 10th consecutive year. Yzerman abruptly stepped down from that role in mid-July, and the Red Wings said any decisions about Larkin’s future would be made by the next person in charge of hockey operations.

SOC--FIFA-LIFE BANS

FIFA bans for life 2 officials for financial wrongdoing when presidents of soccer federations

SUMMARY: FIFA judges have imposed life bans on two former soccer federation presidents for financial misconduct. One of the men had stayed in office since being sanctioned in 2011 as part of a notorious bribery scandal in the Caribbean around the FIFA presidential election that year. FIFA says Montserrat’s long-time soccer leader Vincent Cassell was charged with “abuse of position, systemic conflicts of interest” and misuse of FIFA and federation funds. The former president of Maldives’ soccer federation, Bassam Adeel Jaleel, was expelled from the sport for “misusing FIFA Covid-19 Relief Plan funds.” Maldives media reported that was $1.2 million.

FBN--BROWNS-VERSE

A new team, a new pass-rush bag: Jared Verse’s Browns debut arrives in Jacksonville

SUMMARY: Jared Verse has earned plenty of accolades, including becoming the 16th player to win AP NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and making two Pro Bowl trips in his first two seasons. But after being traded from the Los Angeles Rams to the Cleveland Browns in the blockbuster Myles Garrett deal, Verse is focusing more on team goals heading into his third season. Verse led the Rams with 67 quarterback pressures last season and was second with 7 1/2 sacks. Even though Verse was traded from a Super Bowl contender to a team many expect to pick in the top 10 of the NFL Draft again, he doesn’t seem daunted by the change.

US--AMERICA 250-OBJECTS-SEPT. 11 GOLF BALL

A golf ball found in the World Trade Center rubble became a symbol of incomprehensible loss

SUMMARY: Standing amid the rubble that was what was left of the World Trade Center hours after the attacks of Set. 11, 2001, passing buckets of debris down a line of volunteers and first responders, a little white object poking out of the gray ash caught my attention. Scuffed and dirty, it was unmistakably a golf ball. And in that moment, a symbol of incomprehensible loss. Golf is a mostly frustrating game for duffers, but it’s also about aspiration, friendship and camaraderie. And that is why finding a ball in the smoldering rubble still resonates 25 years later.

ATH--ULTIMATE CHAMPIONSHIPS-MISSING

Injuries, other plans leave some of track’s fastest on sideline for $150K at Ultimate Championship

SUMMARY: It’s supposed to be a track meet featuring the best of the best. When Saturday night’s sprints roll around at the Ultimate Championship, one thing will be missing: the fastest of the fast. The fastest man and woman in the 100 meters this year — Olympic titlist Noah Lyles and burgeoning University of Georgia star Adaejah Hodge — will both be absent from the track meet offering $150,000 top prizes. Lyles is missing because of an injury. Hodge, who set the NCAA record in the 100 meters earlier this year, never planned to be in Budapest. She designed her season around NCAA championships and the Commonwealth Games and came away a winner in both.

FBN--ON FOOTBALL-INJURIES

High-profile injuries already adding up 2 games into the NFL season

SUMMARY: Sam Darnold played just five snaps. A.J. Brown will be sidelined for a while. De’Zhaun Stribling was carted off the field. High-profile injuries are adding up just two games into the NFL season. It’s not even Sunday yet. Darnold got good news about his hip injury. Not so much for Brown. Stribling’s status wasn’t immediately known. NFL teams have to deal with injuries every week. It’s part of football. The teams with the most depth and best backups find ways to overcome key losses. The Seahawks and Patriots have to figure it out quickly.

Host Germany and France will play in the other medal-round game Saturday. The Americans routed Hungary 108-56, which was the second-biggest margin of victory in the quarterfinals in World Cup history. The 108 points also was the most by a team in the quarterfinals. FBN--RAMS-GARRETT

Myles Garrett acknowledges knee injury is significant after 0-tackle debut in Rams’ Australia loss

SUMMARY: Myles Garrett finally acknowledged his knee injury is more serious than he had been letting on following his quiet debut for the Los Angeles Rams in their season-opening defeat in Australia. The reigning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year made zero tackles and no impact on the game during the Rams’ 27-7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. Garrett missed much of training camp and the Rams’ recent weeks of practices to rest his knee, but the injury wasn’t known to be as serious as Garrett finally acknowledged it is. Garrett’s ineffectiveness was just one problem for the Rams’ overmatched defense.
