US--NCAA ELIGIBILITY RULES

NCAA Division I board: No plans to change age-based eligibility rule being challenged in court

SUMMARY: The NCAA Division I Board of Directors is standing firm on its new age-based eligibility rule despite legal challenges. The rule allows athletes five seasons of competition over a five-year period starting with full-time enrollment or the academic year after their 19th birthday. Lawsuits have been filed, arguing the rule unfairly limits athletes’ college careers. The board insists the rule is well-informed and widely supported. It eliminates waivers for extended eligibility, except for specific cases like military service. The SEC supports the rule although some leaders have concerns about its timing and effectiveness.

BBO--ROCKIES-GOODMAN-TRADE RUMORS

Rockies All-Star catcher Hunter Goodman tunes out trade buzz, keeps up power surge as deadline nears

SUMMARY: If the trade rumors prove accurate, Hunter Goodman could soon be receiving a big promotion in the standings. Should that happen, though, it comes with a price in saying so long to teammates bonded through losses. The name of the two-time All-Star catcher for the Colorado Rockies has been bandied about leading into the trade deadline on Aug. 3. He tries to keep his focus on launching fastballs out of the park, not conjecture away from the field. Goodman’s not simply a Coors Field creation, either, with 18 of his 31 homers this season being hit away from the hitter friendly park.
