Haiti’s World Cup jersey deemed too political, echoing censure of its Winter Olympic uniform

SUMMARY: Haiti has been forced to change the design of its World Cup jersey after FIFA deemed it too political. The jersey is made by Colombian sportswear manufacturer Saeta and originally featured a depiction of the final battle of the 1803 Haitian War of Independence. Saeta says it will comply with the ban but has added that the design was meant as a tribute not a political statement. Already this year the International Olympic Committee required Haiti to remove an image of founding father Toussaint Louverture from its Winter Games uniforms. Designer Stella Jean creatively painted over the figure to comply.
