TEN--ITALIAN OPEN

Swiatek steamrolls Pegula in straight sets to reach Italian Open semifinals

SUMMARY: Three-time champion Iga Swiatek has beaten Jessica Pegula in straight sets to advance to the Italian Open semifinals. The fourth-ranked Swiatek needed just 67 minutes to sweep aside Pegula 6-1, 6-2. Swiatek’s impressive form bodes well for the upcoming French Open, which she has won four times. She will next face either Elena Rybakina or Elina Svitolina, both former Rome champions. In the men’s quarterfinals, two impressive sets from Casper Ruud saw the Norwegian overcome the 13th-ranked Karen Khachanov 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. The match was suspended for more than two hours at the start of the second set because of rain. Ruud will face either 19-year-old Rafael Jodar of Spain or Italian player Luciano Darderi in the semifinals.

The 45-year-old British driver is going to try to become the first woman to complete the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day. According to her NASCAR team BRANDed Management, Legge added the May 24 Cup race in Charlotte to her schedule and will compete in the No. 78 for Live Fast Motorsports. US--TRUMP-WORLD CUP-VISAS

Foreigners with World Cup tickets won’t have to pay bonds to enter US, Trump administration tells AP

SUMMARY: The Trump administration is suspending a requirement that foreign visitors from certain countries pay up to as much as $15,000 in bonds if they’re confirmed World Cup ticket holders. That’s according to the State Department. The department imposed the bond requirement for countries that it said had high rates of people overstaying their visas and other security issues as part of the administration’s broader crackdown on immigration. The bond move is a rare easing of immigration requirements under the administration. World Cup team players, coaches and some staff already were exempt from the bond requirement. But that didn’t apply to ordinary fans until Wednesday.

FBC--ACC MEETINGS

ACC formally backs Big Ten’s push for the College Football Playoff to expand to 24 teams

SUMMARY: The Atlantic Coast Conference is backing the Big Ten’s push for a 24-team playoff. ACC commissioner Jim Phillips says coaches and athletic directors reached consensus this week on wanting to double the current College Football Playoff model. Phillips says “when you’re leaving national championship-contending teams and schools out of the playoff, you don’t have the right number.” He pointed to Florida State getting snubbed from a four-team CFP field in 2023 and Notre Dame getting left out of last year’s 12-team model.

RAC--PREAKNESS STAKES-LAUREL PARK

Laurel Park waited 114 years for the Preakness. It may be a farewell as much as a debut

SUMMARY: Maryland’s Laurel Park will host the Preakness Stakes for the first — and likely only — time this weekend as the historic racetrack enters its final chapter. Racing is expected to end next year before the property is converted into a training facility. Once home to packed grandstands and stars like Secretariat, Laurel now draws only a few hundred regulars on many race days. Supporters say the track represents more than gambling as horse racing contracts nationwide. The Preakness could also deliver a storybook ending: Hometown horse Taj Mahal will run with trainer Brittany Russell and jockey Sheldon Russell representing their longtime home track.

BKN--NBA-PLAYOFF OFFICIATING

Foul calls are up in the NBA playoffs. History says that’s to be expected

SUMMARY: NBA referees are calling about 11% more personal fouls per game so far in these playoffs than they did during the regular season, a differential that’s on pace to be one of the largest in NBA history. And in the league’s eyes, that’s to be expected. Mindful of criticism from players and coaches that seems like a constant in any postseason, NBA executive Monty McCutchen freely acknowledges that there is a difference between regular season basketball and playoff basketball. But refereeing, he insists, doesn’t fundamentally change at playoff time.

All-American RB Ahmad Hardy discharged after shooting, heads back to Missouri to begin recovery

SUMMARY: All-American running back Ahmad Hardy has been discharged from a Mississippi hospital after a weekend shooting. The Missouri standout was shot in the upper leg at an outdoor concert. Police have three people of interest in custody. Hardy is now returning to Columbia to begin recovery in the hopes of playing this season. Tigers coach Eli Drinkwitz said late Tuesday that Hardy’s recovery timeline is uncertain, and it could take weeks to know if he’ll return this year. Hardy transferred to Missouri last season and ran for more than 1,640 yards with 16 touchdowns. Many believe he could be the No. 1 running back in next year’s NFL draft.

The American pair were among the entrants confirmed on Wednesday by organizers for the clay-court tournament at Roland-Garros, which begins on May 24 in western Paris. The 45-year-old Williams will not play in the women’s singles. Brad Gushue, who recently brought his decorated playing career to an end, is taking over as high-performance director at USA Curling. USA Curling says the addition of Gushue would “further elevate high performance efforts in the next quadrennial and on the road to the 2034 home Games in Salt Lake City.” Gushue skipped Canada to Olympic gold in Turin in 2006, bronze in 2022, and also has been a world champion.

HKN--MAPLE LEAFS-BERUBE FIRED

Maple Leafs fire coach Craig Berube after two seasons, last-place finish in Atlantic Division

SUMMARY: The Toronto Maple Leafs have fired coach Craig Berube after he guided the team to a last-place finish in the Atlantic Division this season. The move ended Berube’s two-year run with the Maple Leafs. He helped the club to a 108-point campaign in his first season as coach, but Toronto struggled mightily in 2025-26. New general manager John Chayka called Wednesday’s move “an opportunity for a fresh start” rather than an evaluation of Berube. Berube went 84-62-18 with Toronto, but the Maple Leafs were just 32-36-14 this season. The drop in points from 108 to 78 was the team’s largest year-over-year points decline.

The Las Vegas team will be formally introduced at a news conference on Wednesday, with Hamilton to follow on Thursday. GLF--COBBS CREEK REVIVAL

A Philadelphia golf course seeks to reclaim its status as a force for opportunity and inclusion

SUMMARY: The Philadelphia region is rich in golf history, yet the area’s greatest contribution to the game may have come from public course in West Philadelphia. While golf greats were playing for trophies and titles on the Main Line, Cobbs Creek Golf Club offered golfers not permitted on those courses due to their color or gender opportunity and inclusion. Charlie Sifford, the first Black member of the PGA Tour, called Cobbs Creek home, and his relationship with Tiger Woods helped jumpstart a grand plan to rebuild the “Olde Course” while supplementing education and supporting the community.

The rest of the Dodgers were 2 for 25 with four walks. Ohtani is in his first full season as a two-way player for the Dodgers.
