BKN--TIPOFF

Monday’s NBA playoffs: Nuggets face elimination, Thunder could sweep, and Pistons in trouble?

SUMMARY: The Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets have developed an intense rivalry. The teams will meet in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series on Monday night with the Nuggets facing elimination. That game is the nightcap of a three-game slate, one that also could see the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder get their third consecutive first-round sweep. The Thunder lead Phoenix 3-0, with Game 4 on the Suns’ home floor. Leading off the night is Game 4 in Orlando, where the eighth-seeded Magic will aim to take a 3-1 lead over the top-seeded Detroit Pistons in their Eastern Conference quarterfinal matchup.

SOC--WOMEN’S CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

Arsenal capitalizes on Lyon blunders to win 2-1 in Women’s Champions League semifinals

SUMMARY: Arsenal has benefited from two defensive blunders to rally for a 2-1 win over Lyon in the first leg of the Women’s Champions League semifinals and keep on course to defend its title. Lyon went ahead thanks to Jule Brand’s 19th-minute goal for the record eight-time champions. Arsenal was gifted an equalizer in the 59th when Mariona Caldentey’s low free kick into the area was fumbled backward by goalkeeper Christiane Endler and onto the post. Ingrid Engen inadvertently turned the ball into her own net. Engen compounded that mistake by misreading a back-pass and Olivia Smith got in to score on the rebound. The return match is in Lyon on Saturday.

SOC--ENGLISH ROUNDUP

Chelsea beats Leeds on Fernandez goal and sets up FA Cup final meeting with Man City

SUMMARY: Chelsea’s season might be unraveling but it will still include an appearance in the FA Cup final. Enzo Fernandez’s 23rd-minute header has secured Chelsea a 1-0 win over Leeds in the semifinals to set up a meeting with Manchester City in the May 16 title match. Chelsea’s run in the FA Cup is salvaging a campaign that has veered off the rails after a humiliating exit from the Champions League and five straight losses in the Premier League that led to the midweek dismissal of manager Liam Rosenior. Calum McFarlane, Rosenior’s assistant, has taken interim control of Chelsea and will now be leading the team back out at Wembley Stadium next month.

HKN--HURRICANES ADVANCE

The Carolina Hurricanes use postseason experience to advance again in NHL playoffs sweep

SUMMARY: The Carolina Hurricanes’ postseason experience showed in their first-round sweep of the Ottawa Senators in the NHL playoffs. The Hurricanes closed out the series with Saturday’s Game 4 road win. That closed a best-of-7 series that saw the Eastern Conference’s top seed never trail. The Hurricanes won behind elite play in net from Frederik Andersen and a penalty kill that allowed just one goal in the series. Carolina also got an elite showing from its second line of Logan Stankoven, Taylor Hall and Jackson Blake. This marked the eighth straight postseason that Carolina has won at least one series.

Wolves’ Anthony Edwards has bone bruise in left knee and is likely to miss weeks, AP source says

SUMMARY: The left knee of Minnesota guard Anthony Edwards remained structurally intact when he was injured during Game 4 of his team’s Western Conference first-round playoff series, but he is likely to miss multiple weeks, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Edwards has a bone bruise and also hyperextended the knee, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hasn’t announced details or a return-to-play timeline. Edwards was hurt in the first half of Minnesota’s 112-96 win over the Nuggets, a victory that gave the Timberwolves a 3-1 lead. The Wolves also lost Donte DiVincenzo in that game with a torn Achilles tendon, meaning his season is over.

GLF--EUROPEAN TOUR

Bernd Wiesberger rallies to win China Open for first European title since returning from LIV Golf

SUMMARY: Bernd Wiesberger is finally a winner again on the European tour. The Austrian played bogey-free and shot 67 to rally past Adrian Otaegui of Spain and win the China Open. It’s his first victory since Denmark in 2021 when Wiesberger qualified for his only Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits. He then left for LIV Golf for two years until returning to the European tour. Otaegui had a three-shot lead on the back nine until bogeys on both par 3s. He needed birdie on the par-5 18th to force a playoff but drove into a bush and made double bogey.
