FBN--INSIDE THE NUMBERS

DESCRIPTION: The Buffalo Bills moved on from coach Sean McDermott after a successful nine-year run that included at least one playoff win the last six seasons but no Super Bowl appearances. Three other teams are keeping their long-term coaches despite not winning it all. Whether that leads the ultimate success of a Super Bowl ring remains to be seen. But only one coach hired since the start of the Super Bowl era in 1966 won his first championship with a team later than his eighth season with Bill Cowher winning it all for Pittsburgh after the end of his 14th season in 2005. Warriors prepare to go forward without Jimmy Butler after season-ending right knee injury

SUMMARY: Steve Kerr and the Golden State Warriors are still coming to terms with how dramatically their season changes now given Jimmy Butler’s season-ending right knee injury and how they must depend on their depth going forward without the do-everything guard. An MRI exam after the injury revealed Butler tore the ACL in his right knee during the third quarter of a 135-112 victory Monday against his former Miami team and will need surgery. He landed awkwardly moments after catching a pass in the paint following a collision with the Heat’s Davion Mitchell. Butler’s surgery date hadn’t been set.

SUMMARY: The Indiana Hoosiers were ready to party Tuesday night, and hundreds of loyal fans joined them when they arrived back on campus in Bloomington. Fans chanted “Hoo, hoo, hoo, Hoo-siers,” as the team buses arrived at Indiana’s practice facility. Part of the crowd at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium jeered the Brazil forward nearly every time he touched the ball early on in the league-phase game in Madrid, but the boos subdued as the match went on and were virtually all gone by the time Vinícius scored his first Champions League goal of the season in the 63rd minute.

Duke files a lawsuit against QB Darian Mensah to enforce his contract and block a transfer

SUMMARY: Duke has filed a lawsuit against quarterback Darian Mensah seeking to block his efforts to transfer and reach a contract with another school to play elsewhere next season. The university filed its complaint in Durham County Superior Court on Monday. That came three days after Mensah reversed his previously announced plan to return to the Blue Devils. The complaint states Duke’s two-season contract with Mensah runs through 2026. It also argues that the contract requires any dispute to go through arbitration to reach resolution.

FBN--ON FOOTBALL-TUESDAY TAKEAWAYS

In the NFL, winning seasons and playoff appearances don’t always equate to job security

SUMMARY: Winning isn’t everything. Winning the Super Bowl matters most. Sean McDermott became the latest coach to learn that harsh reality when the Buffalo Bills fired him after falling short in the playoffs for the seventh straight season. McDermott led the Bills to the playoffs eight times in nine seasons but they didn’t make it past the AFC championship game, losing twice to Kansas City. Now, Buffalo looks for a coach who can help the franchise capture its first Lombardi Trophy. McDermott turned the Bills into a perennial contender, but couldn’t secure that elusive Super Bowl victory so he’s out. It happened to Tony Dungy in Tampa Bay, John Fox in Denver, Andy Reid in Philadelphia, among many others.

FBN--GIANTS-HARBAUGH

New coach John Harbaugh embraces the challenge of turning the Giants back into contenders

SUMMARY: John Harbaugh takes over as coach of the New York Giants with plenty of power over shaping their future and an eagerness to turn them back into a contender. Harbaugh is reporting directly to ownership rather than general manager Joe Schoen, a structure that he’s comfortable with from his nearly two decades with the Baltimore Ravens. While everyone involved is trying to downplay the arrangement, there is no doubt that Harbaugh is now the chief decision-maker in football operations. The 63-year Super Bowl champion brings instant credibility and immediate winning expectations to an organization that has struggled to sustain success.

GLF--ON THE FRINGE-TOUR

Aloha feels more like goodbye for Sony Open. Other PGA Tour events might feel the same way

SUMMARY: Aloha feels a lot more like goodbye than hello at the Sony Open. And it’s not the only tournament that has reason to wonder about its place on the PGA Tour schedule. There was a distinct vibe at the Sony Open that Hawaii might no longer be in the tour’s future. It’s not much different at The American Express even with a powerful sponsor and a home in the California desert that players enjoy. What some tournaments have in common is an uncertain future as the PGA Tour works toward revamping the schedule to make all tournaments more meaningful.

The No. 16 seed then won a tough three-setter against Antonia Ruzic in 2 hours and 22 minutes. Osaka has won two of her four Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open.
