SOC--ENGLISH ROUNDUP

Salah returns to help Liverpool beat Brighton in Premier League. Palmer scores in Chelsea win

SUMMARY: The first stage of Mohamed Salah’s rehabilitation at Liverpool is complete after the Egypt forward returned to the team for its 2-0 win over Brighton in the Premier League. The question now as Salah heads off to the Africa Cup of Nations is whether there’s a future for him at Anfield when he comes back. Salah, who let rip last weekend about his current frustrations at Liverpool, entered as a 26th-minute substitute to a big ovation and set up the second of Hugo Ekitike’s goals as the defending champion extended its unbeaten run to five games in all competitions. Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 after Cole Palmer’s first goal in three months. First-place Arsenal hosts last-place Wolverhampton later.

BBO--METS-POLANCO

Mets reach 2-year deal with infielder Jorge Polanco after losing Pete Alonso, AP source says

SUMMARY: A person with knowledge of the agreement says the New York Mets have agreed to a two-year deal with veteran infielder Jorge Polanco. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal wasn’t announced and was pending a physical. Polanco hit .265 with 26 home runs and 78 RBIs this year for the Seattle Mariners. It was the 32-year-old’s second season with Seattle after a decade with the Minnesota Twins. Polanco’s arrival comes after the departures of outfielder Brandon Nimmo, closer Edwin Díaz and first baseman Pete Alonso left New York without three of its fan favorites.

The Egypt forward entered in the 26th minute following an injury to Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. The home support chanted Salah’s song and there was a big roar when Salah’s name was read out.
