BBO--SPORTS-BETTING-ARRESTS
Cleveland Guardians’ pitcher Luis Ortiz pleads not guilty to taking bribes to aid gamblers
SUMMARY: Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz has pleaded not guilty to charges that he and teammate Emmanuel Clase took bribes to help gamblers win bets placed on pitches they threw. The 26-year-old starting pitcher appeared in Brooklyn federal court Wednesday after his initial arrest last weekend. Clase, the Guardian’s former closer, will be arraigned at the same courthouse Thursday. The two natives of the Dominican Republic have been on non-disciplinary paid leave since July, when MLB began investigating what it said was unusually high in-game betting activity when they pitched. Following the pitchers’ indictments, Major League Baseball announced new limits on betting on individual pitches.

US-FBN--ANTONIO BROWN-SHOOTING
Ex-NFL star Antonio Brown gets $25K bail and GPS monitor on Miami attempted murder charge
SUMMARY: A Miami judge ordered that former NFL star wide receiver Antonio Brown will be released on $25,000 bail and must wear an ankle monitor. He has pleaded not guilty to the second-degree attempted murder charge in Florida. That carries a potential 15-year prison sentence and a fine up to $10,000 if he’s convicted. His lawyer said the 37-year-old Brown would return to his home Florida while the case proceeds. Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security staffer after a celebrity boxing match on May 16 and firing two shots at a man he had gotten into a fistfight with earlier. FBN--JAGUARS-HUNTER
It’s ‘very premature’ to discuss whether Travis Hunter will play both ways in 2026, Jags coach says
SUMMARY: Jacksonville Jaguars coach Liam Coen says it’s too early to discuss whether Travis Hunter will play on both sides of the ball in 2026. Hunter had season-ending surgery this week to repair a ligament in his right knee and is expected to return to the football field within six months. Coen declined to commit to Hunter playing receiver and cornerback in 2026. He says “all of that is very premature” and adds Hunter will be evaluated at the end of the season like everyone else. Hunter was coming off a career performance in London before his injury, and the Jaguars were planning to use him as their No. 1 receiver moving forward.

FBC--FIT TO BE TIED
‘Not fair at all.’ In the super-sized conference era, a school’s fate could hinge on tiebreakers
SUMMARY: There is growing concern among college football coaches about spots in the Power Four conference title games coming down to tiebreakers instead of play on the field. That concern is highest in the ACC, where seven teams have two conference losses or less with three weeks to go in the regular season. Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi prefers the old divisional play system, which he feels was fairer. Duke coach Manny Diaz says the heightened impact of tiebreakers is one of the “unintended consequences” of massive conference expansion that makes it impossible for every team to play each other.

OLY--WINTER SPORTS
Winter Olympics sports resist push to add cyclocross and cross-country running to their program
SUMMARY: Organizers of traditional snow and ice sports said Wednesday they do not want events from summer federations added to their Winter Olympics program. Cyclocross and cross-country running have been suggested as additions to the Winter Games for the 2030 Olympics hosted in the French Alps and Nice. The Winter Olympic Federations group of governing bodies says those would be unwelcome “piecemeal proposals.” They want the Winter Games to celebrate “sports practiced on snow and ice, with distinct culture, athletes, and fields of play.” A review of the Winter Games program was started by new International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry in June.

FBC--T25-COLLEGE FOOTBALL PICKS
College football picks: Trend of going for it on 4th down continues to rise and so does success rate
SUMMARY: The trend of college football teams going for it on fourth down instead of punting or attempting field goals is continuing to rise, and so is the success rate. Through Week 11, the average number of fourth-down conversion attempts per game is 3.64. That’s up 7.7% from last season. The conversion rate is 54.9%. The rise of analytics in the early 2010s has encouraged more aggressive decisions. Data shows that the reward of going for it on fourth down can outweigh the risk.

SUMMARY: Longtime thoroughbred trainer Dale Romans has entered the Kentucky campaign to succeed retiring Republican Mitch McConnell in the U.S. Senate. Romans portrays himself as an independent Democrat able to cut through what he calls “partisan nonsense” to tackle trade, health care and immigration. In his announcement Wednesday, Romans pushed back against President Donald Trump’s tactics in his immigration crackdown. Romans points to the decades he’s worked alongside immigrant laborers at racetracks and says raids by immigration agents have created fear and resentment. And the first day at the LA Coliseum, July 15, will include all three rounds of the women’s 100 meters. Sprinters normally run a maximum of two races in a day at a major event. Online gambling is everywhere. So are the risks
SUMMARY: With the rise of online betting and prediction markets, states and public health organizations are devoting resources to people who become addicted or develop a problematic habit. According to those in the space, it can be helpful for new gamblers to set limits in advance on how much they’re willing to lose and how much time they’re willing to spend. Many of the platforms and apps that offer gambling, such as FanDuel and DraftKings, also include optional safeguards to limit time or losses. Other apps can block access to the platforms for set amounts of time.

But many fear women will be left behind, with roster limits threatening opportunities in nonrevenue sports and underfunded schools like HBCUs facing even greater strain.
