HKN--20 YEARS OF SHOOTOUTS
DESCRIPTION: This is the 20th anniversary of the shootout arriving in the NHL. At one point early on, nearly 15% of games were decided by the 1-on-1 matchups between skaters and goaltenders. That has since been reduced by overtime changes, including a move to 3-on-3 play, but ties that were a regular part of the game for a century are gone for good. Even if there are occasional gripes about it, the shootout is wildly popular among fans. By Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno. 600 words, photos, glances.

CAR--NASCAR-IN THE PITS
DESCRIPTION: CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Jordan stood outside the steps of a federal courthouse and acknowledged he was willing to settle an antitrust suit against NASCAR. The judge months ago admonished both sides to come to a resolution. Now, in declarations filed late last week from many of the top teams in NASCAR, the likes of Roger Penske, Rick Hendrick and Joe Gibbs have called for a settlement. The likelihood of finding some sort of peace agreement seemed slim, though, when hours later the attorney representing the two teams suing NASCAR said he looked forward to the scheduled December trial. But what’s at stake -- and what the non-suing teams have realized -- is the entire NASCAR ecosystem and aside from 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports have realized the harsh reality. FBN--MARK SANCHEZ-STABBING
Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is now facing a felony charge in Indianapolis altercation
SUMMARY: Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is now facing a felony charge of battery involving serious bodily injury in addition to the misdemeanor charges stemming from a weekend incident in Indianapolis that led to his arrest. Marion County prosecutor Ryan Mears made the announcement about the new charge, which carries a potential sentence of one to six years in prison. Sanchez was pepper-sprayed and stabbed multiple times during the altercation, according to court records filed Sunday. A police affidavit alleges that Sanchez, smelling of alcohol, accosted a 69-year-old truck driver who backed into a hotel’s loading docks, leading to a confrontation outside the vehicle that prompted the driver to pull out a knife to defend himself.

SUMMARY: The Los Angeles Angels are facing a court trial over whether the team is responsible for the drug overdose death of one of its star pitchers. Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday. The family of pitcher Tyler Skaggs filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the team after he died from an overdose on a team trip to Texas in 2019. An Angels official was convicted of providing a fentanyl-laced oxycodone pill to Skaggs that caused his death. CN-HOCKEY STICK FACTORY
Canada’s last hockey stick factory survives in face of tariff threats and globalization
SUMMARY: Roustan Hockey, Canada’s last major wooden hockey stick factory, faces challenges from trade tensions. Located southwest of Toronto, the factory has roots dating back to the 1800s. It survived globalization but now grapples with tariffs from the U.S. under former President Donald Trump. These tariffs have created uncertainty for the business, affecting shipments to the U.S. and causing delays. The Canadian economy has also been hit, with a 1.6% contraction in the second quarter. Despite the decline in wooden stick demand, Roustan Hockey continues to produce, emphasizing its cultural significance in Canada.

UEFA allows Barcelona in US and Milan in Australia but calls those overseas league games regrettable
SUMMARY: Tradition-busting plans for Barcelona to play a league game in Miami and AC Milan to feature in Australia should now be able to go ahead. European soccer body UEFA says it will exceptionally and reluctantly not oppose the plans. The proposed games have met fierce opposition from fan groups across Europe who see a threat to cut teams’ ties to their home communities. UEFA consent was a key step for La Liga’s plan to stage Villarreal vs. Barcelona in Miami on Dec. 20. UEFA blames a lack of clear regulations from FIFA. BE WELL--COLD WATER IMMERSION
Cold-water immersion may offer health benefits -- and also presents risks
SUMMARY: Claims about the benefits of cold-water immersion date back centuries. Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence, wrote toward the end of his life about using a cold foot bath daily for 60 years. More recently, polar bear plunges, ice baths and open-water swimming have becoming popular activities. While evidence is building around the positive mental health effects of taking a plunge in chilly water, scientific confirmation is still lacking. A pair of British researchers say any benefits come from the body’s cold-shock response: the sudden fall of skin temperature, the release of stress hormones and endorphins, and the anti-inflammatory effect. They advise caution because diving in because deaths are not uncommon.

Silly mistakes, costly blunders and head-scratching decisions led to sloppy football
SUMMARY: Sunday was filled with sloppy football, silly mistakes and head-scratching decisions. Another NFL player gave away a touchdown by carelessly dropping the ball before he crossed the goal line. A roughing-the-kicker penalty erased a touchdown return in a different game. The Super Bowl champions ignored their record-setting running back. The most egregious play of Week 5 occurred when Cardinals running back Emari Demercado turned a 72-yard touchdown run into a touchback by slowing down near the goal line and releasing the ball as Titans cornerback L’Jarius Sneed swiped at his arm. Officials initially ruled it a touchdown but a video review showed Demercado didn’t have possession when he entered the end zone.

Brown and DeVonta Smith had a strong first half, but the Eagles’ offense faltered late. Saquon Barkley was underutilized, with just 30 yards on six carries.
