SOC--ENGLISH ROUNDUP

Haaland scores again and Rodri gets another injury in Man City’s win at Brentford in Premier League

SUMMARY: Another goal for the prolific Erling Haaland and another injury for the unfortunate Rodri. Manchester City beat Brentford 1-0 in the Premier League thanks to a competition-leading ninth goal by Haaland. He used power to shrug off one defender and then skill to go round another before slotting home in the ninth minute. A hard-fought victory for City was soured by the sight of Rodri, last year Ballon d’Or winner, being forced off midway through the first half with a suspected hamstring injury. He missed most of last season with ACL damage. City moved up to fifth place and three points off the lead.

Jordan Addison’s late touchdown gives Vikings 21-17 win over Browns in London

SUMMARY: Vikings receiver Jordan Addison caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Carson Wentz with 25 seconds left to give Minnesota a 21-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The 10-play, 80-yard drive gave the Vikings a much-needed win on their historic international road trip, which started with a 24-21 loss to the Steelers in Dublin last week. It also spoiled Dillon Gabriel’s first NFL start, as the Browns rookie put his team in position to win by throwing two touchdown passes. Fellow rookie Quinshon Judkins rushed for 110 yards on 23 carries. Wentz shook off a shoulder injury that briefly sent him to the locker room and led two scoring drives in the second half.

BKN--NBA-REFS IN CAMP

Some referees took the floor in NBA camps this year, and coaches welcomed their presence

SUMMARY: The NBA has introduced a new program this season, sending referees to training camps to officiate scrimmages. This initiative aims to give officials extra practice and help teams understand how games will be called. Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers and others have praised the program, saying it helps build relationships between players, coaches, and officials in a less competitive environment. Coaches like Washington’s Brian Keefe and Portland’s Chauncey Billups have called it a great idea. The league believes this approach fosters respect for the game and improves communication. Coaches and players seem to appreciate the effort.

HKN--20 YEARS OF SHOOTOUTS

This is the 20th anniversary of the shootout arriving in the NHL. At one point early on, nearly 15% of games were decided by the 1-on-1 matchups between skaters and goaltenders. That has since been reduced by overtime changes, including a move to 3-on-3 play, but ties that were a regular part of the game for a century are gone for good. Even if there are occasional gripes about it, the shootout is wildly popular among fans. By Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno.
