BBO--DODGERS-OHTANI

Dodgers 2-way star Shohei Ohtani to start on mound Wednesday. Team goes to 6-man rotation

SUMMARY: Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani is expected to start on the mound Wednesday as he continues his buildup from elbow surgery that kept him from pitching all last season. Manager Dave Roberts said Sunday before the series finale in Boston that the plan is for Ohtani to work four innings at Cincinnati, with an off day to recover before hitting in a game. With Ohtani working his way back along with left-hander Blake Snell, who pitched 4 2/3 innings Saturday in his fourth rehab start for Triple-A Oklahoma City, the Dodgers will be using a six-man rotation.

CAR--F1-BELGIAN GP

Piastri beats Norris to win Formula 1’s rain-delayed Belgian Grand Prix

SUMMARY: Oscar Piastri beat his McLaren teammate and title rival Lando Norris to win Formula 1’s Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday after heavy rain delayed the start. Piastri eased past his teammate and title rival Norris on the first racing lap after the safety car pulled into the pits on lap four. It followed a delay of more than an hour to the start. CYC--TOUR DE FRANCE

Pogačar effectively seals 4th Tour de France title as organizers neutralize times before stage ends

SUMMARY: Slovenian rider Tadej Pogačar has effectively sealed his fourth Tour de France title after organizers decided to neutralize the times with 50 kilometers (31 miles) left because of the threat of rain and crashes. Freezing the times for the 21st and final stage into Paris all-but-ensured victory for Pogačar, but he still had to cross the finish line later in order to win. The decision was made in the late afternoon and, shortly after Pogačar reached 50 kilometers to go, heavy rain began falling and drenched the roads. Pogačar is the defending champion and also won in 2020 and ’21. Will be updated.

CYC--TOUR DE FRANCE-MONTMARTRE

Tour de France finale brings excitement to Montmartre with a climb to Sacré-Coeur

SUMMARY: The Tour de France is breaking tradition this year by having riders climb Montmartre during the final stage. Organizers aim to build on the success of last year’s Paris Olympics road race, which drew massive crowds. On Sunday, fans gathered early to secure spots on the cobbled Rue Lepic and beneath the Sacré-Coeur basilica. Riders will also pass the Moulin Rouge, where dancers will perform. Traditionally, the final stage is processional until a sprint on the Champs-Élysées. This year, the final climb is less than 7 kilometers from the finish, making a sprint finish unlikely.

US--NATIVE MASCOTS-MENTAL HEALTH RISKS

Trump’s demand for Washington NFL team name change ignores years of psychological data, experts say

SUMMARY: President Donald Trump has threatened to block a new stadium deal unless Washington’s NFL team reverts its name to a racial slur. Experts say Native American mascots have long been linked to negative mental health outcomes, especially for children. Advocates have been calling for their removal for generations, and researchers say Native mascots reinforce racial bias. The Washington Redskins changed to the Commanders in 2020. Trump’s spokesperson says “He likes to see results on behalf of the American people” and that sports fans would agree with him about restoring the old name. More than 1,500 grade schools across the country still use Native mascots.

US--NCAA-ELIGIBILITY LAWSUITS

Legal battles over college sports eligibility seem to be slowing down. With fall football practice starting, players hoping for court rulings to play may be disappointed. Sam Ehrlich is a legal studies professor at Boise State who tracks lawsuits against the NCAA. He notes that it’s likely too late for new cases to impact this season. Ehrlich has a spreadsheet tracks 27 eligibility lawsuits with 15 active and football has the most cases. Some schools help by filing waivers, while others leave athletes in limbo. The NCAA would like limited liability protection from Congress to address eligibility lawsuits. Courts have returned inconsistent results for players seeking another season. By Teresa M. Walker.

OLY--USOPC-TRANSGENDER ATHLETES

In its push to remove transgender athletes from Olympic sports, the Trump administration provided the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee a detailed legal brief on how such a move would not conflict with the 1978 federal statute governing the Olympic movement, but even that protection offers no guarantee that the new policy won’t be challenged in court.
