BKL--WNBA ALL-STAR-CLARK
Caitlin Clark pulls out of All-Star weekend because of groin injury
SUMMARY: Caitlin Clark is out of All-Star weekend as a participant. The Indiana Fever guard injured her right groin on Tuesday night in the final minute of the team’s win over the Connecticut Sun. She said Thursday in a message posted on X that she was “sad and disappointed” to pull out of the All-Star Game and 3-Point Contest. Clark is captain of one of the All-Star teams. The second-year guard was the leading vote getter from the fans and has been a huge reason the league has had a boon in attendance and ratings over the last two seasons.

FBN--RASHEE RICE-DALLAS CRASH
Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice sentenced to 30 days in jail over Dallas high-speed crash
SUMMARY: Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been sentenced to 30 days in jail after authorities said he and another driver traveling at high speeds in sports cars caused a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway last year. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office said on Thursday that Rice pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. Officials say Rice was driving a Lamborghini SUV at 119 mph when he made “multiple aggressive maneuvers around traffic” and struck other vehicles. Prosecutors said that after the crash, Rice then fled on foot.

Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte’s home burglarized during All-Star break
SUMMARY: Police are investigating a burglary at a home reportedly owned by Arizona Diamondbacks star Ketel Marte. BBO--ROCKIES-SLIDE TOWARD HISTORY
Rock bottom? Rockies try to avoid worst mark over 162-game season as they emerge from All-Star break
SUMMARY: The Colorado Rockies are enduring a historically dismal season, sitting at 22-74. They’re on pace for 125 losses a year after the Chicago White Sox went 41-121, which is the worst mark since baseball adopted a 162-game schedule in 1961. The slump led to the firing of manager Bud Black in May. Last weekend, the team drafted Ethan Holliday with the fourth overall pick for a glimmer of hope down the road. The Rockies haven’t won back-to-back home games this season and risk setting a record this weekend for losing the most home series in a row. Despite the struggles, attendance remains robust, averaging over 30,000 fans per game.

GLF--BRITISH OPEN-TECHNOLOGY
Spidercam technology brings golf’s oldest major into the modern world
SUMMARY: The oldest major championship has taken a step into the modern world by using a technological feature that British Open organizers hope will bring to life one of the most storied walks in golf. Spidercam was used in golf for the first time at Royal Portrush on Thursday. Its a camera suspended above the 18th green using four pylons about 25 meters high, and gives TV viewers unique views of the closing hole. It’s held in a resting position at the back of the green for approach shots. Spidercam swoops down as the players walk to the green and hovers above them as they make their putts.

US--CLIMATE-HEAT-DEATH VALLEY-ULTRAMARATHON
The grueling 135-mile journey of a 66-year-old runner through one of the hottest places on Earth
SUMMARY: For 37 years in a searing California desert, runners from across the globe have embarked on a 135-mile race through one of the hottest places on Earth. But few have completed what’s billed the world’s toughest foot race more times than Danny Westergaard. At 66 years old, Westergaard ran to the finish line of Badwater 135 through Death Valley for the 18th time this year during the park’s hottest season. The race takes place in July, when temperatures last year hit a record 129 F. But even as one of the most extreme places on the planet, Death Valley is not immune to climate change. Seven of its hottest summers have occurred in the past 10 years, and if climate change continues at its current pace, more places will end up like it.

SUMMARY: Canada forward Olivia Smith has become the most expensive player in women’s soccer history at a reported one million pounds ($1.34 million) after Arsenal signed her from Liverpool. The new benchmark in women’s soccer would surpass the 900,000 pounds ($1.1 million) Chelsea paid when signing Naomi Girma from the San Diego Wave in January. GLF--BRITISH OPEN-SENIOR CITIZENS
Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood lead surprising days of the ‘older gentlemen’ at British Open
SUMMARY: Phil Mickelson and Lee Westwood are offering reminders that the British Open doesn’t discriminate against older players. Mickelson already won the PGA Championship at age 50 to set the major record. Now at 55, he shot 70 in the opening round at Royal Portrush. Lee Westwood is 52 and hasn’t played a major since he joined Saudi-funded LIV Golf in 2022. He went through qualifying this year and was atop the leaderboard for much of Thursday morning. He shot 69. Links golf is not always about distance so that helps. Westwood referred to his age group as older gentlemen.

SOC--SOCCER OR FOOTBALL
Why the US might finally start calling soccer ‘football’
SUMMARY: It is the world’s most popular sport and yet there is still debate over what it should actually be called. Is it football or soccer? U.S. President Donald Trump waded into the topic while at the Club World Cup final in New Jersey last Sunday. He joked that he could pass an executive order to bring the United States in line with much of the rest of the world and ensure that from now on Americans refer to it as football. Despite “soccer” being widely associated with the U.S., it is commonly accepted that the word was actually coined in Britain, perhaps as far back as the 1880s.

Yu’s times in the 200- and 400-meter individual medley and the 200 butterfly rank among the best in the world this year. British Open at Portrush starts with an Irish cheer. That’s how the last one ended
SUMMARY: The 153rd edition of the British Open is underway at Royal Portrush. Padraig Harrington of Ireland had the honor of the opening tee shot. That was a fitting choice. He’s a two-time Open champion. And it meant the Open at Royal Portrush would start the way the last one ended with big cheers for an Irish golf shot. The last time here was 2019 when Shane Lowry ended it with a tap-in par to win the claret jug. Rory McIlroy is the favorite son of Northern Ireland and played in the afternoon. Scottie Scheffler was part of the morning wave.
