OLY--SEMENYA-COURT RULING

A ruling this week in the Caster Semenya case could reignite the issue of sex eligibility in sports

SUMMARY: A ruling expected this week by the highest chamber of the European Court of Human Rights could reignite champion runner Caster Semenya’s yearslong legal battle against sports authorities over sex eligibility rules. Those rules banned Semenya from top events like the Olympics and world championships because she refused to medically reduce her natural testosterone levels. The South African, who is a two-time Olympic champion in the 800 meters, has fought against the rules in court since 2018. She has lost two previous cases, but a ruling expected on Thursday by the European rights court’s top judges could open a legal avenue for the rules to be reconsidered.
