Titleholder Swiatek to face No. 1 Sabalenka in semis after 26th straight win at Roland-Garros

SUMMARY: Four-time champion Iga Swiatek has posted a 26th successive win at Roland-Garros and set up a French Open semifinal clash against top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka. Swiatek defeated Elina Svitolina 6-1, 7-5. The consecutive wins record on the Parisian red clay is Chris Evert’s 29. Sabalenka defeated Zheng Qinwen in straight sets to reach the semifinals for the second time. Sabalenka is chasing her first title at Roland-Garros. She overcame a shaky start and windy conditions to prevail 7-6, 6-3 and extend her record against the Olympic champion to 7-1. In the men’s draw, Lorenzo Musetti reached his first semifinal at the French Open and second at a Grand Slam tournament. The 23-year-old Italian beat Frances Tiafoe of the United States 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the same stadium where he won a bronze medal at last year’s Olympics. The eighth-seeded Musetti improved to 19-3 this season on red clay. He’ll face defending champion Carlos Alcaraz or Tommy Paul on Friday for a berth in the championship match. Musetti and No. 1 Jannik Sinner gave Italy two male quarterfinalists at Roland-Garros for the first time since 1973. Sinner faces unseeded Alexander Bublik in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Walter said he has watched the video and doesn’t remember the specific moment but acknowledged “that language doesn’t reflect my values or the standards of this program.” Wake Forest athletic director John Currie said he was “surprised and deeply disappointed.” Tennessee beat Wake Forest 11-5 on Monday night to win the Knoxville Regional and earn a best-of-three super regional matchup with Arkansas for a chance to advance to the College World Series.

BKN--TIMBERWOLVES-OFFSEASON

Can Timberwolves keep Randle, Reid, and Alexander-Walker? Connelly says continuity is best

SUMMARY: The Minnesota Timberwolves have plenty of reason to run back the same roster after reaching the Western Conference finals for the second straight time. That was their initial assessment last year as well before the big trade that sent Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks went down right before the beginning of training camp. President of basketball operations Tim Connelly said he doesn’t feel pressure to make roster changes out of confidence in the team’s core. Keeping Julius Randle, Naz Reid and Nickeil Alexander-Walker will be difficult. All three players could become free agents.

New York and Minnesota still leading the way, both unbeaten heading into Commissioner’s Cup play

SUMMARY: The New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx picked up right where they left off last season when reaching the WNBA Finals. Both teams have gone undefeated through their first seven games with the Lynx set to host Phoenix on Tuesday night in a Commissioner’s Cup matchup. The Liberty and Lynx faced off last season in the in-season tournament final with Minnesota taking the title. New York got revenge, winning the WNBA championship for the first time in franchise history. The two teams are each 7-0 this season, marking the latest that more than one franchise had been undefeated this long into the season since 2016.

BKN--NBA FINALS-FORGOTTEN SONICS

SuperSonics fans feel no allegiance to the Thunder in these NBA Finals. Go Pacers, the scornful say

SUMMARY: It’s logical to think someone like Danny Ball is a fair representation of Seattle these days. Ball, a hoops fan who runs an Instagram account called “Iconic Sonics,” is pulling for the Indiana Pacers over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals. There are no deep ties between Seattle and Indianapolis. But right now, Seattle may as well be an Indy suburb. Seattle fans lost their NBA franchise, the SuperSonics, in 2008 when it was stolen from them and rebranded in Oklahoma City. For the scornful, that means one thing: Go Pacers. The NBA Finals begin Thursday night.

BOX--KHELIF-SEX TEST

World Boxing apologizes for naming Olympic champion Imane Khelif in sex test policy

SUMMARY: The president of World Boxing has apologized after Olympic champion Imane Khelif was singled out in the governing body’s announcement to make sex testing mandatory. Algerian boxer Khelif, who won gold at the Paris Games last summer amid scrutiny over her eligibility, was specifically mentioned when World Boxing released its new policy last week. But its president Boris van der Vorst contacted the Algerian Boxing Federation to acknowledge that was wrong.

TEN--FRENCH OPEN-WAKE EARLY OR PLAY LATE

Tennis players wake up early or stay up late and it can be anyone’s guess what time matches start

SUMMARY: Tennis players at Grand Slam tournaments such as the French Open can have to play at 11 a.m. or 8 p.m. or anywhere in between. And sometimes much later than that. Some athletes don’t care what time they play. But some hate having to wake up early. And others hate having to stay up really late. Coco Gauff is one of those who says she doesn’t care what time she plays. The 2023 U.S. Open champion is scheduled to face reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys in an all-American quarterfinal at Roland-Garros at 11 a.m. local time Wednesday.

GLF--ON THE FRINGE-WOODS

Tiger Woods’ son is in the spotlight for a big win. Jack Nicklaus says a tough road lies ahead

SUMMARY: Charlie Woods won his first big golf tournament and the 16-year-old son of Tiger Woods got plenty of attention. Jack Nicklaus knows as well as anyone what that can be like. He says kids of great players have a tough road ahead of them. Nicklaus’ namesake oldest son won a prestigious amateur event. His third-oldest son was on the cover of Sports Illustrated when he was only 16. Nicklaus says the rule was for them to play golf only if they wanted to play golf. He says the difference now is the endless social media attention.

BKN--NBA FINALS-SHAI AND TYRESE

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Tyrese Haliburton took roads less traveled to stardom in the NBA Finals

SUMMARY: Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Indiana’s Tyrese Haliburton weren’t expected to be starring in the leading roles on the NBA Finals stage. At least not by many. Gilgeous-Alexander was cut from his junior varsity team as a ninth grader and was traded from the Los Angeles Clippers after his rookie year. The major college programs didn’t notice Haliburton until his senior year of high school. He wasn’t a one-and-done at Iowa State, wasn’t a top-10 pick and got traded from Sacramento during his third year in the league. Now, Gilgeous-Alexander is the league MVP in Oklahoma City and Haliburton is a two-time All-Star with Indiana and an Olympic gold medalist heading into the NBA Finals.

TEN--FRENCH OPEN-DJOKOVIC VS ZVEREV

French Open: Novak Djokovic is certainly no dark horse to quarterfinal foe Alexander Zverev

SUMMARY: Novak Djokovic will take on Alexander Zverev in the French Open quarterfinals. It’s their 14th head-to-head meeting as pros. Djokovic leads 8-5. The other men’s quarterfinal Wednesday on the top half of the draw will be No. 1 Jannik Sinner against 62nd-ranked Alexander Bublik. As much success as Djokovic has enjoyed over the years, he still found himself worrying about what is going on with his game. That’s because he went through a three-match losing streak, including two on red clay as the French Open approached. But he is 8-0 since, including a title at the Geneva Open and four straight-set wins in Paris.

BKN--NBA FINALS-WHAT ABOUT DEFENSE?

INDIANAPOLIS -- Much has been made of the pace the Thunder and Pacers like to play. But for them to use that up-tempo style, they have to get stops on defense. Indiana and OKC have shown they can play well on both ends on the court, though the Thunder are statistically better on defense than Indiana. By Michael Marot and Cliff Brunt.

SOF--NCAA-CHEER UP

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Women’s college softball games offer a constant soundtrack – players actively and loudly cheering for their teammates from the dugouts. The sport is ultra-competitive, yet for decades, softball players have brought a light-hearted nature to dugouts, complete with cheers, chants, dances and props. Some of the creations are elaborate and some are simple. But something interesting is almost always happening. The sport’s surge in popularity over the past 10 years has drawn more attention to the practice. Critics say it’s poor sportsmanship and it’s over the top, but that hasn’t slowed the creativity.
