Lula is declared winner of Brazil's election as Bolsonaro rejects results
RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Flavio Bolsonaro is refusing to concede defeat to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who bested him by nearly 4.4 million votes, following a chaotic delay in poll closing times ordered by a Supreme Court justice. Both Bolsonaro and Lula asked that polls remain open late after issues with public transportation and inclement weather in some parts of Brazil. The decision to keep polls open came three minutes before scheduled poll close; some polls got word after they’d closed and it’s unclear how many votes were cast in the extended hours. Bolsonaro called the move to extend voting hours unprecedented and asked for the election results to be annulled.
Serbia’s strongman leader Vucic concedes defeat to student-led movement in seismic political shift
BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government. It was a seismic political shift in the Balkan country where Vucic, who had been endorsed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and who denounced the student movement as a foreign-led attempt to unseat him, led for 14 years. High turnout and gathering tensions marked the highly contested parliamentary election that was a showdown between Vucic and his right-wing Serbian Progressive Party and university students.
Trump escalates anti-Muslim attacks against El-Sayed in Michigan, drawing Arab American rebuke
PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — President Donald Trump is intensifying his anti-Muslim rhetoric against Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed. He portrayed him during a Sunday rally in Port Huron as a threat to national security and questioned his loyalty to the United States. The remarks drew a sharp rebuke from a former top Arab American ally. Bishara Bahbah, a founder of Arab Americans for Trump, said the president's comments were racist. El-Sayed, who could become the nation’s first Muslim senator, faces Republican Mike Rogers in one of the races that will help determine control of the U.S. Senate in this year's midterms.
Venezuela's opposition leader Machado returns after months in exile, as doubts over democracy deepen
CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Nobel laureate María Corina Machado has reappeared in Venezuela for the first time since December. She announced her return on social media, saying, “I am here. With you.” Opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez confirmed her arrival and expressed support. He emphasized the importance of her return for Venezuelans. Machado's homecoming comes amid growing concerns about Venezuela's democratic future. Since the U.S. military deposed Nicolás Maduro, acting President Delcy Rodríguez has led the country. Rodríguez, a Maduro ally, has exceeded her authorized term, and no election is scheduled.
What to know about China’s plenum as Xi seeks stronger Communist Party discipline
HONG KONG (AP) — China's leaders begin a four-day meeting Monday to discuss strengthening the Communist Party's discipline. President Xi Jinping is pushing for greater loyalty and reliability from officials while deepening his yearslong campaign against corruption. This closed-door gathering comes about a year before Xi is expected to secure a fourth term and personnel changes to key leadership bodies. During the plenum, the central committee will discuss a draft policy decision on advancing “full and rigorous” self-governance of the party. While Xi has consolidated his grip on power, analysts say the plenum will offer him an opportunity to further align what Chinese officials do with what Beijing wants. But it is unlikely to offer hints about Xi's heir.
Baby orangutans in India expose illegal wildlife trade as experts question a billionaire’s zoo
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — The discovery of five baby orangutans abandoned on a plantation in eastern India is highlighting the country’s growing role as a destination for trafficked apes. Experts say wealthy collectors, expanding air links with Southeast Asia and loopholes in wildlife laws are to blame. India also legally imported 41 orangutans between 2021 and 2024 and experts have raised questions about their origins. At the same time, efforts to return rescued orangutans to Indonesia have stalled. Scrutiny over ownership of apes intensified after one orangutan was transferred to a private wildlife facility run by billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s family.
Blanche says Trump isn't trying to meddle with Alaska election results by suing over Senate race
WASHINGTON (AP) — Attorney General Todd Blanche is defending the Trump administration’s lawsuit to block certification of Alaska's Senate results if incumbent Republican Dan Sullivan loses the race. Blanche says the legal challenge filed last week was a necessary step to avoid confusing voters in the closely watched midterm race. Trump says he told his administration to file the case. Republicans fear that a second candidate on the ballot who is named Dan Sullivan could siphon away votes from the senator and tip the outcome in favor of Democrat Mary Peltola. That Dan Sullivan is a retired teacher and school administrator from a tiny fishing community.
A fire at a seafood plant in Oregon forces evacuations amid fear of ammonia exposure
A coastal city in Oregon issued evacuations after a fire erupted at a seafood wholesaler and there was concern the smoke contained ammonia. The City of Newport initially issued the evacuation order for a 1-mile radius surrounding a Pacific Seafood processing plant but decreased the zone after it was determined that ammonia tanks at the plant were stable. Approximately 30 to 40 people were in the building at the time the fire erupted, but no civilians were injured. One firefighter was taken to the hospital for exhaustion. Firefighters continued working to put out the fire Sunday evening.
More flooding in Four Corners region after storms bring heavy rain and at least one tornado
A rain-soaked swath of the Southwest U.S. has endured additional flooding after days of rain forced evacuations and water rescues. The National Weather Service issued a flood watch Sunday for much of the Four Corners region — the meeting point of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah. At least one tornado touched down in New Mexico. Though local officials forecast further receding of swollen rivers, they say many residents remain evacuated and without power. The area has experienced unusually heavy rain since last Wednesday that has surged rivers, flooding homes and forcing water rescues. Officials say they're not aware of any deaths.
Ohio State replaces BYU at No. 2 in AP Top 25; No. 1 Miami only team to hold its spot in poll
No. 1 Miami is the only team to hold its spot in The Associated Press Top 25 after another wild week of college football. Idle Ohio State moved up to No. 2 in the wake of BYU’s loss at UCF and subsequent fall to No. 8. Georgia, Indiana and Notre Dame round out the top five after three more top-10 teams went down to make it 10 in the last three weeks. Miami, Utah and UCLA are the only remaining unbeaten Bowl Subdivision teams. Sportradar says that's the fewest at this point in a season since there were three left in 1977.
