Exit polls suggest no clear winner in Israel's election, but Netanyahu is far from defeated
JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli voters have delivered a setback to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's far-right coalition, with exit polls suggesting no clear winner in the election. Netanyahu's opponents appear to have a majority in the next parliament, but forming a coalition could take weeks even if the disparate parties — which include both Arab-led factions and parties that have said they won't partner with them — can reach a deal. Netanyahu remains defiant, dismissing partnerships with Arab parties as treasonous. The close results indicate challenges in unseating him despite public anger over recent conflicts. Both Netanyahu and his opponent, Gadi Eisenkot, are claiming victory, setting the stage for political maneuvering. If no coalition forms, another election might be necessary.
Brazil's Flávio Bolsonaro and family will get US visas after election loss, State Department says
WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior State Department official says Brazilian opposition candidate Flávio Bolsonaro and his family will be granted U.S. visas after his weekend loss to incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a hotly contested race that bucked a trend of conservative electoral results in Latin America. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to visa privacy laws, said U.S. visas would be granted to Bolsonaro and his family "to allow them entry into the United States.” Bolsonaro, who had President Donald Trump’s tacit support, had been under investigation for corruption, money laundering and tax evasion in Brazil and had been ordered to surrender his passport.
Talarico vows to 'take back Texas' as Trump makes last-minute push to keep the state in GOP hands
LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico has decried a “corruption crisis” he says is plaguing the U.S. political system. Talarico on Tuesday was competing for the spotlight with President Donald Trump in deeply conservative West Texas. Trump was in Texas for the third time in a month in a last-minute push to back Republican Ken Paxton and block Democrats from notching their first statewide election victory in more than three decades. Talarico took the stage in Lubbock an hour after Trump wrapped up his own speech across town. He cast himself as an underdog against powerful forces including Trump and Elon Musk, who is bankrolling attack ads against Talarico on Paxton’s behalf. Trump leaned into cultural issues to portray Talarico as too liberal for Texas.
Alexander brothers each get 30 years in prison after women speak of being drugged and raped by them
NEW YORK (AP) — Three brothers convicted of exploiting their wealth and access to luxury real estate to drug and rape dozens of women have been sentenced to 30 years in prison. U.S. District Judge Valerie E. Caproni announced the punishment for Tal, Oren and Alon Alexander — known collectively as the Alexander Brothers — on Tuesday after 11 accusers spoke in court. Some of the women choked up as they described how the assaults stole their innocence and left them haunted by nightmares and fearing men. None of the brothers testified during the first phase of the trial, but each spoke Tuesday before they were sentenced.
Serial killer Ted Bundy is linked to another Utah teenager's 1974 killing through DNA testing
Authorities have connected serial killer Ted Bundy to the death of a Utah teenager through DNA evidence. Tuesday's announcement comes exactly 52 years after her body was discovered. Bundy killed at least 30 women and girls in the 1970s. He was executed in 1989. Investigators are now satisfied that Bundy was responsible for killing 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith in 1974. Her death had been a cold case. DNA connections between Smith and another Bundy victim helped close the case. Officials emphasize the importance of preserving evidence, as Bundy's confirmed victim count continues to grow.
AP sources: Federal agents search Beverly Hills mansion in investigation of ex-Rep. Eric Swalwell
WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal law enforcement agents have searched a Beverly Hills home as part of an investigation into Eric Swalwell, who resigned from Congress amid a wave of sexual misconduct allegations. That's according to two people familiar with the matter. Agents searched the home of wealthy developer and Swalwell donor Stephen Cloobeck, where the ex-Congressman spent time before resigning from office in April, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the investigation. Swalwell, D-Calif., has denied criminal wrongdoing. Cloobeck, the founder of the Diamond Resorts International timeshare company, told the New York Post in April that he cut ties with Swalwell as accusations against him mounted.
Truck stolen by escaped Tennessee inmate is found abandoned in Illinois, authorities say
Authorities say an escaped Tennessee inmate convicted of murdering a co-worker stole a truck from a nearby farm and apparently made it to southern Illinois before abandoning it. Jacob Morley, who was serving a life sentence for killing a co-worker four years ago, was found to be missing from the Northwest Correctional Complex late on Sunday. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says Morley stole a farm truck about 2 miles from the prison at about 1 a.m. Monday. Investigators say the truck was found abandoned Tuesday in Marion, Illinois, about 120 miles north of the prison. The police chief in Marion says no other stolen vehicles or suspicious things have been reported in his city.
Supreme Court won't intervene to allow judges to pause some deportation proceedings
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has declined to intervene in a dispute over a Biden-era immigration regulation. Democratic-led cities sought to revive the rule, which allowed immigration judges to pause some deportation proceedings. They argued it helped crime victims and neglected juveniles. Texas and the Trump administration had blocked the regulation, claiming it allowed people to stay indefinitely. Baltimore, Columbus, Ohio and New Haven, Connecticut, along with a legal group, filed an emergency appeal to defend the rule. The Justice Department argued the cities lacked legal standing and had not shown immediate harm.
FACT FOCUS: Kennedy's claim that Arabs 'don't produce science' meets a Nobel Prize reality check
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has sparked controversy with comments about Arab contributions to science and literature. Speaking at a campaign event in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kennedy claimed Arabs do not produce science or win major prizes like the Nobel or Fields. His remarks have been widely condemned as untrue and racially biased, especially in a state with a large Arab American population. Critics point out that Arabs have indeed won Nobel Prizes, including Egyptian writer Naguib Mahfouz and Yemeni activist Tawakkol Karman. An HHS representative did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Rays stun Brewers with 2-run rally in 12th inning and force World Series Game 5 with 4-3 win
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Jonny DeLuca and pinch-hitter Ben Williamson singled home runs in a stunning 12th-inning rally, and the Tampa Bay Rays staved off World Series elimination with a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers that forced Game 5. Cooper Pratt hit a tiebreaking home run off Ian Seymour in the top of the 12th as Milwaukee neared a sweep and its first World Series title. But the Rays rallied in the bottom half after a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz on Junior Caminero’s leadoff grounder against reliever Antonio Senzatela. Liam Hicks singled off Shane Drohan, who relieved in his first appearance since Oct. 15, and DeLuca’s single to center drove in pinch-runner Cedric Mullins to tie the score at 3.
