The Met Gala is over, but dandyism isn't. Here's how to dress like a dandy in everyday life

NEW YORK (AP) — Dandyism was at the heart of Monday’s Met Gala, where many of the world’s most famous and influential tastemakers donned their luxury best to kick off the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibit. But Black dandyism isn’t limited to expensive couture. It’s displayed daily. Its foundation rests upon tenants such as striking colors, stylish accessories and fine tailoring, but there’s no singular look or guide. Everyday dandies create their own unique styles and consider it a lifestyle, with many saying the key to the Black dandy look is confidence and creativity in a world that has embraced comfort over style.

Movie Review: The sweep of history courses through Jia Zhangke's 'Caught By the Tides'

Jia Zhangke’s “Caught by the Tides” is less than two hours long and yet contains nearly a quarter century of time’s relentless march forward. Few films course with history the way it does in the Chinese master’s latest, an epic collage that spans 21 years. Jia assembled a mix of fiction and documentary, including images from his earlier films and newly shot scenes. That might sound like a mishmash. But for the preeminent cinematic chronicler of 21st century China, it’s a remarkably cohesive, even profound vessel for capturing what has most interested him as a filmmaker. That's the tidal wave-sized currents of technological progress and social transmutation that wash over a lifetime.

The four women each say that Robinson would wait until he was alone with them in his Los Angeles house then sexually assault and rape them over their objections and protests.

In pinstripes and hats, with canes and twists on suiting, Met Gala crowd largely did menswear proud

NEW YORK (AP) — Pinstripes. All Ways. Hats galore. Pantsuits. Gown suits. Zoot suits. Canes. A single cigar for Madonna. And expert displays of tailoring. The Met Gala crowd, for the most part, did the Black dandy menswear theme proud at fashion’s biggest party of the year. Colman Domingo earned high praise. He wore two Valentino looks in homage to the late fashion great André Leon Talley, a fixture on the gala steps for years. And who faltered on the dress code? James Corden, for one, in a drab black tuxedo. Halle Berry raised some eyebrows in a revealing Louis Vuitton sheer look.

Things to know about the trial of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

NEW YORK (AP) — The sex trafficking trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs, one of the biggest music moguls and cultural figures of the past four decades, has begun in New York with jury selection. Combs is charged with five counts, including sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion. He denies all of the allegations. Twelve jurors along with six alternates will be chosen, with opening statements expected to begin on May 12. The trial is expected to last at least eight weeks. Prosecutors say four of Combs' accusers will testify. A judge ruled jurors can see security video of Combs beating one of his accusers at a hotel in 2016.

Inside the Met Gala: Under a petal-filled sky, guests honor Black style, hail a ‘monumental night’

NEW YORK (AP) — Once inside the Met Gala, guests passed under a slew of flower petals suspended from the ceiling. An orchestra performed favorites like Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” on Monday evening. Guests sipped cocktails or headed to sample the exhibit on Black menswear over the centuries. They mused on what dandyism meant to them. And they hailed the fact that the one of the biggest cultural events of the year was devoted this time exclusively to Black style and Black designers. That's a recognition many felt was overdue but also welcome and even courageous.

Singer-songwriter Lizzy McAlpine makes her Broadway debut, coming at a 'perfect time'

NEW YORK (AP) — Lizzy McAlpine is surrounded by music these days. She’s making her Broadway debut in a daring stage musical, and when she retreats to her dressing room, her own songs demand attention. The folk-pop singer-songwriter is following last year’s release of her third album, “Older,” with a role in “Floyd Collins,” a musical about life, death and fame. She calls it perfect timing. McAlpine has been building a sonic reputation for raw, stripped-down tracks and intimate, deeply reflective lyrics. Her single “Ceilings” went viral on TikTok, and “Older” has been hailed by critics. Broadway made sense for a woman who grew up watching shows in New York.

Nevada hearing may give first public view into legal spat over control of Murdoch media empire

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A hearing before Nevada’s high court could provide the first public view into a secretive case about who will control Rupert Murdoch’s media empire after he dies. The case has been unfolding behind closed doors in state court in Reno. Most documents have been sealed. But reporting by the The New York Times eventually revealed Murdoch wants to give one of his sons control of his media empire to ensure Fox News maintains its conservative editorial slant. The Nevada Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday afternoon on a bid by media outlets including the Times and The Associated Press to unseal the case and make future hearings public.
