US and UK announce a trade deal, but steel imports are still being negotiated
KANANASKIS, Alberta (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer say they have signed a trade deal that will slash tariffs on U.K. auto and aerospace industry imports, but they are still discussing how to handle steel production. The pair spoke to reporters Monday at the Group of Seven summit. Trump brandished the pages of what he said was the long-awaited agreement but then dropped them. He also at first said the United States had reached an agreement with the European Union when he meant the United Kingdom. The U.S. president nonetheless insisted the pact would “produce a lot of jobs, a lot of income.”
Senate expected to pass crypto bill without addressing Trump's investments
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is voting on legislation regulating a form of cryptocurrency called stablecoins. The bill is the first in what’s expected to be a wave of crypto-friendly legislation in Congress following the industry’s heavy spending in last year’s election. The bill has advanced with bipartisan support so far, but some Democrats have raised concerns that the measure does little to address former President Donald Trump’s personal interests in crypto. Known as the GENIUS Act, the bill would establish guardrails and consumer protections for stablecoins, a type of cryptocurrency typically pegged to the U.S. dollar.
Jury finds MyPillow founder defamed former employee for a leading voting equipment company
DENVER (AP) — A federal jury in Colorado has found MyPillow founder Mike Lindell defamed a former employee for a leading voting equipment company. Jurors reached the verdict Monday for Lindell, one of the nation’s most prominent election conspiracy theorists. He had called the employee for Dominion Voting Systems, Eric Coomer, a traitor. Lindell’s online media platform also streamed an event where a conservative podcaster accused Coomer of helping rig the 2020 election. During the trial in Denver, Lindell denied making any statements he knew to be false about Coomer. Coomer said his career and life have been destroyed as a result of the statements. Coomer’s lawyers said Lindell either knew the statements were lies, or conveyed them recklessly without knowing if they were true.
Israel condemns black partition walls around its pavilions at Paris Air Show
PARIS (AP) — French authorities have ordered black partition walls around some Israeli defense industry displays at the Paris Air Show. Israel’s Ministry of Defense has condemned the move and demanded an immediate reversal. The walls appeared overnight ahead of the air show’s opening on Monday, visually isolating Israeli booths from dozens of other international exhibitors. Israeli officials say the move followed a last-minute demand from organizers to remove offensive weapons systems from display. A French official said the decision came from a top security agency under the prime minister. The official said Israeli exhibitors were told weeks in advance that they couldn’t exhibit certain types of equipment, and some complied but others didn't.
Wall Street recovers from Friday's shock as US stocks rise and oil prices ease
NEW YORK (AP) — Calm returned to Wall Street, and U.S. stocks rallied, while oil prices gave back some of their initial spurts following Israel’s attack on Iranian nuclear and military targets at the end of last week. The S&P 500 climbed 0.9% Monday to recover most of its drop from Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 1.5%. They joined a worldwide rise for stock prices. The price for a barrel of benchmark U.S. oil fell by 1.7%, while the price of gold eased. Treasury yields rose ahead of a meeting by the Federal Reserve this week.
Oil prices rise and US futures fall as Israel urges residents of Iran's capital to evacuate
BANGKOK (AP) — Oil prices have resumed their upward climb and U.S. futures are lower after Israel's military issued an evacuation warning to 330,000 people in Iran's capital Tehran. Asian shares were mixed early Tuesday. The evacuation warning was for a part of the city of 9.5 million that houses the country’s state TV and police headquarters and three large hospitals, including one owned by Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard. On Monday, the S&P 500 climbed 0.9% to recover most of its drop from Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.8%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 1.5%. G7 leaders gather in Canada for a summit overshadowed by Israel-Iran crisis and trade wars
KANANASKIS, Alberta (AP) — Leaders of some of the world’s biggest economic powers arrive in the Canadian Rockies for a Group of Seven summit that's been shadowed by an escalating conflict between Israel and Iran and U.S. President Donald Trump’s unresolved trade war. Israel’s strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliation appeared to catch many world leaders unawares. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has decided to abandon the annual practice of issuing a joint statement. With other leaders wanting to talk to Trump in an effort to talk him out of slapping tariffs, the summit risks being a series of bilateral conversations rather than a show of unity.
The Trump family's next venture, a mobile phone company
NEW YORK (AP) — The Trump family company says it's launching a mobile phone company, the latest in a string of ventures that have been announced while Donald Trump is in the White House. Eric Trump, one of President Trump’s sons, said Monday that the new company would build its own phones and maintain a call center in the U.S. The new business follows several real estate deals for towers and resorts in the Middle East, including a golf development in Qatar announced in April, and a $1.5 billion partnership to build golf courses, hotels and real estate projects in Vietnam.
Senate Republicans seek tougher Medicaid cuts and lower SALT deduction in Trump's big bill
WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Republicans are proposing deeper Medicaid cuts, including new work requirements for parents of teens, as a way to offset the costs of making President Donald Trump’s tax breaks more permanent. They are keeping in place an existing $10,000 annual cap on state and local tax deductions known as SALT. But they boost a tax credit for some seniors to $6,000. The proposals unveiled Monday by Republicans for Trump's “big, beautiful bill” provide the most comprehensive look yet at changes the GOP senators want to make to the package approved by House Republicans last month. Republican leaders are pushing to fast-track the package by Trump’s Fourth of July deadline.
LeBron stars in Amazon ad, credits family for historic 23rd season return while nursing knee injury
LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James may be daydreaming about Prime Day deals in his new Amazon commercial, but there’s no fantasy when it comes to his real-life focus: getting his knee healthy in time for training camp. The 40-year-old Los Angeles Lakers superstar plans to return for his 23rd NBA season, which would make him the first player in league history to reach that milestone. For now, James is prioritizing rest and recovery after spraining a ligament in April, following the Lakers season-ending playoff loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves. James says his left knee is feeling “good" during an interview about starring in a new 60-second commercial called “What’s Next?”
