Amos Moran Burke

Amos Moran Burke, 77

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Amos Moran Burke, of Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, May 5, 2008, at Forsyth Hospital, Winston-Salem. He was 77.

He was born Sept. 7, 1930, in Blackwater, Va., to the late Ezra and Maggie (Neal) Burke.

Mr. Burke served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, remaining in the Air Force Reserve and Delaware Air National Guard until he retired in 1977.

He moved to Dover in 1953 and worked for the State Board of Health, rising to serve as director of health planning for the state.

Mr. Burke volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Kent General Hospital.

After his retirement in 1991, he moved to Winston-Salem in 1993. While there he became a member of Kingswood United Methodist Church in Rural Hall and volunteered in many areas, including at Mineral Springs Elementary School.

He was preceded in death by sister, Dorothea Madge Minor; and brothers, Ballard Marshal Burke and Paul Mandalee Burke.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Burke; son, Michael Burke; and daughter, Pat Stone, all of Winston-Salem.

Remembrance services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Trader Funeral Home, Dover, where friends may call from 1 p.m.

Burial will be at Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

The family requests that memorial contributions be given to Kingswood United Methodist Church, designated for a special Mineral Springs Elementary School Fund, P.O. Box 399, Rural Hall, NC 27045.
