DOVER - Allen Rockwell Chrislip Jr. died Monday, June 9, 2014 at Kent General Hospital in Dover, DE. He was 82. Allen R. Chrislip Jr. was born Nov. 25, 1931 in Clarksburg, W.Va., the son of the late Allen R. Chrislip Sr. and Mary E. Hursey. Mr. Chrislip was a 1950 graduate of Shinnston High School. He attended Fairmont State College for one year before enlisting in the United States Air Force for the Korean War. He was stationed in Nashville, Tenn. and Cheyenne, Wy. before being transferred to Ashiya, Japan to the 39th Air Rescue Squadron. From 1951-1953 he rescued downed pilots and wounded soldiers in Korea during the Korean War. After an honorable discharge he went back to school on his GI Bill and received a BA in Education from Fairmont State College (University). In 1959 he moved to Sudlersville, Md. and taught history at Sudlersville High School. In 1961, he married Nancy DeMary of Enterprise, W.Va. and the two moved to Newton, N.C. where he became a certified Speech and Language Pathologist and served as a Speech and Language therapist for Catawba County School system for 27 years. During the same time he earned his Master's Degree In Education from Western Carolina University, and he also practiced private Speech and Language Therapy for autistic children and patients who had suffered strokes, as well as teaching adult continuing education to prisoners who were trying to get their G.E.D. Mr. Chrislip was an active member of the Lions Club and Pilot Club while in N.C. He retired from the school system in 1987. In 1988 he moved to Delaware, and in 1990 married the late Brenda Chrislip. The two moved to Dover where he remained active with the Kent County Delaware schools conducting speech therapy and driving a bus for the school system before fully retiring in 2003. He enjoyed gardening with his wife in their later years and singing Bass in the Barbershop quartet. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Brenda Chrislip. He is survived by one son, Christopher Chrislip and wife Jennifer, of Fredericksburg, Va.; one step daughter, Tara Thompson of Dover; five grandchildren, Trevor Thompson of Smyrna, Meghan Thompson of Dover, Hayden Pierson of Dover, Wyatt Chrislip of Fredericksburg, Va. and Benjamin Chrislip of Fredericksburg, Va.; and one great-granddaughter, Raylene Thompson of Dover. Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, 2014 at Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home, 370 Cypress St., Millington, MD., where friends may call one hour prior.
