Allen H. Cohey Sr., 85
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Allen H. Cohey Sr., of Chestertown, died on April 1, 2009, at the Queen Anne's County Hospice House in Centreville. He was 85. He was born in Queen Anne's County on March 18, 1924, the son of the late Charles Henry and Ella Beatrice Ireland Cohey. He was a 1941 graduate of Sudlersville High School and on Nov. 22, 1947, he married Mary Theresa Schauber Cohey. Mr. Cohey purchased his farm when he was 21 years old and operated it as a dairy and grain farm until 1977. Since 1977 he operated Cohey Farms as a grain farm until his recent illness. Mr. Cohey was a life member and past president of the Queen Anne's County Farm Bureau, a member of the Maryland Farm Bureau, and served on the Maryland Agriculture Land Preservation Board and Rural Legacy Board as well as the Maryland Milk Cooperative. He also served on the Queen Anne's County Election Board where he was past president and was an associate member of the Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post 36 in Chestertown. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Chestertown. Mr. Cohey enjoyed farming and family. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, the late Allen H. Cohey Jr. on March 10, 2009; a grandson, the late Michael Cohey Jr. on March 9, 1992; along with siblings, Charles Cohey, Wilson Cohey, Leonard Cohey, Pauline Squires, Viola Ward, Virginia Oakes, and Oline Fairbanks. He is survived by his son, Michael Cohey and his wife Jill of Chestertown; a daughter, Margaret Kaufman and her husband Butch of Centreville; sister, Betty Walraven and her husband Eddie of Millington; a brother, Mervin Cohey and his wife Esther of Chestertown; grandchildren, Brandi McGough, Michele Polly, Allen H. Cohey III, Sarah Cohey, Shari Cohey, Tyler Kaufman, and Wilson Cohey; great-grandchildren, Michael McGough, Zachary McGough, Dillon Polly, Jaxon Polly, and James Z. Jones; along with many nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday, April 6, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, High Street, Chestertown. Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, April 5, between the hours of 2 and 5 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown. Interment will be in Holy Family Cemetery in Church Hill. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Queen Anne's County Hospice House, 255 Comet Drive, Centreville, MD 21617.
