Ellenton, Fla. - Alfred Oscar (Songbird) Sammons born February 16, 1943, age 72 of Ellenton, Fla. passed away September 5, 2015 at Manatee Memorial Hospital, Bradenton, Fla. He retired from EMT Bear, Del. as a tractor/trailer driver, delivering U.S. Mail. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Alfred P. Sammons and Millie S. Sammons; niece, Yvonne Gourley; son, Lee J. Sweetman, III; father and mother-in-law, Leonard C. Gesullo, Sr. and Edith I. Gesullo; two brother-in-laws, Leonard C. Gesullo, Jr. and Jerome A. Gesullo; son-in-law, Thomas J. Dougherty, III. Survived by wife, JoAnne M. Sammons; sister, Loretta Gourley and her husband Dennis; brother, Terry Sammons and his wife Mary Ann; daughters, Gina M. Dougherty and her companion Jim, Michele Brown and her husband Donald; son, Jeffrey L. Sweetman; brother-in-law, Robert M. Gesullo, Sr. and his companion Liz; daughter-in-law, Melinda Sweetman; uncle, Robert L. Carey and his companion Ruth; nine grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and very special friends. Alfred volunteered at Bayhealth Medical Center (KGH), Dover doing pastoral care, Smyrna Police Dept., C.A.P.S Dept. and Manatee Sheriff Dept., Bradenton, Fla. He played guitar and sang with the Starlighters Band for 20 plus years. Alfred was a member of the Nanticoke, Lenni-Lenape Indian Tribe of Bridgeton, N.J. where he served on the council and was the co-tribal chairman from November 1989 to October 1995. Alfred also was a member of Ewell's - St. Paul UMC of Clayton, Del., but attended Ellenton UMC in Florida, but most important he is a child of God. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Monday, September 14, 2015 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call one hour prior.
