Alfred Joseph Dougherty

SMYRNA - Alfred "Al" Joseph Dougherty, Jr. passed away suddenly on Sat., Mar. 5, 2016 from a heart attack. He was born Oct. 29, 1955 to Alfred and Nellie Dougherty. He grew up in New Castle and graduated from Salesianum High School in 1973. Al worked diligently for the State of Delaware as an Analytical Chemist for forty-five years. It was a job he enjoyed, only recently retiring on Mar. 1st. Al loved his family and many friends. He was known for his friendly manner and generosity. He always accepted people as they were without judgement. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Ada Dougherty; his sons, Alfred Dougherty, III "A.J." (Brandi) and Edward Dougherty (Beverly); step-son, John Eckerd (Nikki); step daughter, Melissa "Missy" Eckerd; and 14 grandchildren. He is also survived by his parents, Alfred and Nellie Dougherty; a sister, Theresa Black (Terry); and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday, Mar. 11, 2016 at the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna. Memorial services will begin at 6 p.m. Burial will be private.
