MARYDEL - Albert V. Lane Jr., of Marydel, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 2, 2011. He was 79. Al was born Dec. 12, 1931, in Philadelphia, to the late Albert and Bertha Lane. He accomplished many things in the fire service. Al was very involved with the organization and one of the first employees of the Kent County 911 center, and the first retiree in 1991 after 18 years of service. He was a member of the Marydel Vol. Fire Co. for 55 years and held every office on the fire side and the administrative end. Al was also known throughout the State being President of Kent County Fire Chiefs and President of the State Fire Chiefs Association. He was Fireman of the Year, drafting the Power of the Chief's Bill and the Heroic Fireman, as well as being in the Hall of Fame. Al was also Chief Emeritus of the Marydel Fire Company. Al played the Dobro at the Marydel Fire House Blue Grass Pickings. He loved going fishing. He was a man of integrity and was loved by many people. What is a fireman? "He knows the divine peace of selfless service, and a job well done in the name of all men. He doesn't wear buttons or wave flags or shout obscenities, and when he marches, it is to honor a fallen comrade. He doesn't preach the brotherhood of man, he lives it!" He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Carmella Lane of Marydel; sons, Edward Lane of Alameda, Calif., Ronald Lane and his wife Stacey of Marydel; grandchildren, Kyle, Natalie, Alexander and Derek; sisters, Bertha Nelson, and Emmy Lane both of Dover, Jane Lane of Rehoboth and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2011 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Marydel Vol. Fire Co., PO Box 400 Marydel, DE 19964 to refurbish the Antique Fire Truck. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at torbertfuneral.com.
