Agusta 'Gussie' James
DOVER - On October 31, 2021, Agusta "Gussie" James went home to be with the Lord. She was born on November 11, 1929 in Cambridge, Md. to the late Hansel and Mabel Geoghegan.
After graduating from Cambridge High School in 1946, she was honored to have the opportunity to work as a Congressional Page. Described as strong, determined and independent, she flourished as a Revenue Specialist and retired as a Manager of the Income Tax Division -State of Maryland Comptroller of the Treasury.
She loved playing the organ, collecting antiques, stamps, and coins, and belonged to the Milford Stamp Club. She was very proud of her heritage and belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution (Colonel James McCall Chapter).
Gussie will be greatly missed by her survivors: Her children, Wayne Layfield, and Wallace Geoghegan Layfield (Wanda); her grandchildren, Ashley Hernandez (David), Victoria Bishop (Cait) and Michael Layfield (Melanie); her great granddaughters, Presley Hernandez and Leah Layfield; and her nephew, Doug James. She will also be missed by her cherished dog Missie.
Mrs. James was preceded in death by her three husbands, Arthur Stanley Layfield, John Carr Norris, and the love of her life Rev. Joseph E. James.
A Celebration of her Life will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 200 North Church St., Milford, on Thursday 11/11/2021 at 11 a.m.
Interment is Oxford Cemetery in Oxford, Md. immediately following.
