When wind from Hurricane Erin swept through our area, bringing dangerous conditions for tents, we found ourselves in urgent need of a safe indoor space to continue caring for the 28 guests of Tharros Village. Without hesitation, the team at Schell Brothers opened the doors to its employee gym and gave us exactly what we needed: safety, shelter and a sense of calm in the middle of a storm.
This was more than just the use of a building; it was a generous, deeply human act that reminded us of what true community looks like. We are so grateful to Schell Brothers for stepping up in a moment of real need. It has now joined a growing circle of incredible local business and nonprofit partners whose support allows Tharros to operate each day and offers dignity, hope and stability to people who are often overlooked.
Tharros Village is a low-cost, self-governed site along Coastal Highway in Lewes that offers unsheltered people in the Cape region of Sussex County a safe place to stay, rest and rebuild. With the support of neighboring partners, it’s able to provide not just shelter but a foundation for healing and progress. Learn more at tharrosvillage.org.
These businesses and nonprofits quietly and consistently make this mission possible. With their support — and now, with the help of Schell Brothers — we’re able to show up in rain, shine or wind for the people who need us most.
From all of us at Tharros Village, thank you for believing in the power of community and showing what it means to care.
