A 28-year-old Sharptown woman was in jail on $35,000 bail charged with theft of $1,000 to $10,000, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Christina Nicole Abner was charged April 6 in the 8000 block of Hurley's Neck Road, Mardela Springs, after a report was made that a  woman stole her boyfriend's federal tax return, a deputy said.

During the investigation, it was alleged that a woman helped the victim file the return but used her own bank account to receive the refund. According to the victim, he did not receive any of the refund and that it was kept by the woman.

Three men facing drug charges

Three Salisbury men were arrested and charged with drug-related offenses by Maryland State Police on April 11, police said.

Troopers from the Salisbury barrack seized more than 13 grams of marijuana and several grams of crack cocaine, police said.

Arrested were Keith Lamonte Chaney, 26; Albert Baisden, 56; and Ricardo Isau Morales Velasquez, 19, police said.

They said at 10 p.m. troopers from the Salisbury barrack and gang enforcement unit conducted a criminal enforcement initiative to include various investigations and traffic stops.  This led to two drug arrests, one impaired driving arrest and two drug civil citations, police said.

One suspect faces charges of drug distribution for crack cocaine,   police said.

Through investigations and surveillance, gang-related intelligence was gathered for future purposes,  police said.

64 Marylanders died in fired in 2014

The Maryland fire marshal has released a report about fires in the state in 2014.

Brian Geraci said 64 people died in 55 fires last year. That represents a 7 percent decrease, compared to 69 deaths in 59 fires in 2013.

He said most fire deaths, or 57, occurred in residential structures.

Of those, 50 occurred in one- and two-family dwellings. Four were in apartments and two were in mobile homes, Geraci said.

Residential fires accounted for 89 percent of all fire deaths in Maryland.

Fifty-three percent of victims were 60 and older, representing a 7 percent increase from the previous year. Twelve of these fatalities were in homes with no smoke alarms, or with alarms that weren’t working.

Forty-three percent of deaths occurred between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.

There were five fire deaths in Wicomico.

Eight counties had no fire fatalities, including Worcester, Dorchester, Talbot, Caroline, Frederick, Garrett,  Harford and Charles,  according to Geraci.

Man accused of violating protective order

A 23-year-old Pittsville man was released on personal recognizance after being charged with violating a protective order April 6, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Devin T. Lake was charged at 4:45 p.m. after a deputy responded to a residence in the 7000 block of Gumboro Road in Pittsville for a reported altercation, a deputy said.

The deputy learned a man was on the premises causing a disturbance and was also there in violation of a protective order that barred him from the property, the deputy said.

Social networking comments lead to assault

An 18-year-old Salisbury man was in jail on $10,000 bail charged with assault, according to the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office.

Marlon J. Henson was charged April 8 in the 1800 block of Jersey Road, Salisbury on April 9 at 3:30 p.m., according to a deputy, who said he responded to a residence in 1800 block of Jersey Road in reference to a reported disturbance.

The deputy said he met with a female victim who stated that she had been assaulted by her brother.  She said the accused man posted negative comments about her on Facebook and she blocked him.

During the investigation, the deputy said he observed signs of injury that corroborated her account.
