PITTSVILLE - Wilbert Lee Wilkerson died Monday, Dec. 28, 2020, at home with his wife and family at his side. Born in Whitesville, his parents were the late Ernest and Violet Wilkerson.
At the age of 16, he joined the U.S. Army, where he would serve for 22 years and become a Sergeant First Class in the 82nd Airborne Division. He received three Purple Hearts during the Korean and Vietnam War, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Bronze Star. After retiring from the Army, he settled in Pittsville.
He is survived his wife of 52 years, Thai Wilkerson; six children, Rick, Scott, Glenn, Mylinh and Hoang Wilkerson, and Khanh Nguyen; and 12 grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Peggy Littleton, Jean Horne and Lorraine Phillips; and three children, Debbie, Angie and Ronnie Wilkerson.
A funeral service was held Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Salisbury. Interment was at the Line United Methodist Church Cemetery in Delmar.
Arrangements are in the care of Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury.
