Wicomico County officials on Thursday announced the arrival of the COVID-19 coronavirus in the immediate area, and urged residents to be vigilant about distancing and good hygiene.

Health Officer Lori Brewster.

Additionally, there in now a confirmed case of COVID-19 in Accomack County on the Eastern Shore of  Virginia, as well as cases in Delaware, said Wayne Strausburg, the county’s Administrative Director, during a news conference

“This virus has now arrived on Delmarva,” he said. “We anticipate that the spread of the virus will grow now that it’s here.”

Worcester County health officials said the case reported in their jurisdiction also involved a 30-year-old man, who was also in home quarantine. Officials were working to determine who the man had been in contact with prior to his positive test.

The Wicomico County case is a 30-year-old man who had recently traveled out of the country, said Wicomico County Health Officer Lori Brewster.

He was tested at a location outside of the county, and not at Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

The man is now quarantined at home and the Health Department is reaching out to people with whom he has had contact, she said.

The Health Department is working with PRMC to plan for screenings and the eventual arrival of other cases, Brewster said.

“I cannot encourage you enough to maintain social distancing and practice proper hand-washing and other common precautions such as cleaning and disinfecting touch surfaces,” she said.

Earlier in the day, Gov. Larry Hogan reported there are now 107 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Maryland, including a 5-year-old child.

The Health Department has a coronavirus call center 410-341-4600.

Also on Thursday, PRMC decided to suspend all inpatient visitation beginning on Friday, March 20. Exceptions will be considered on a case-by-case basis for specific situations including end of life.

Two parents or caregivers of pediatric patients will be permitted, as long as neither is symptomatic.

In Labor & Delivery, two visitors including the professional support person or postpartum helper will be allowed. One visitor will be allowed in the surgery waiting area per patient, and social distancing is encouraged.
