Wicomico dealing with overnight storm flooding

Posted

Tropical Storm Michael brought the expected high winds, heavy rains and anticipated flooding to Wicomico County overnight Thursday and into Friday.

Flooding was visible in areas where it has become accustomed in recent years: the Canal Woods complex and neighborhood, Route 13 north of Priscilla Street, Salisbury City Park, down Nanticoke and Pemberton roads, and in other areas.

Reports are that as much as 7 inches of rain fell across the county in a two-hour span, as the storm was passing south to north.

County Executive Bob Culver announced that several roads in Wicomico County are impassable:

  • Nanticoke Road is closed at Riawakin Pond.
  • Pemberton Road is closed between Crooked Oak Lane and Harbor Point Drive.
  • The Old Towne subdivision off Pemberton Drive is closed.

Nanticoke Road is heavily traveled at all hours. As of noon Friday, water was overflowing the roadway and dam at Riawakin Pond near the Centennial Village neighborhood.

A detour was established where traffic must use Rockawalkin Road to access Route 50 from the west and the Nanticoke area from the east and north.

The flooding forced Salisbury Zoo to cancel its Saturday night Halloween Happening event. The Zoo’s entrance gates and main pathways were blocked by flood waters.
