Vermon E. Stanley
CAMBRIDGE - Vermon E. Stanley, the first born child of the late Edgar W. Henry and Ada P. Henry, passed away on Friday, March 14, 2008 at her home in Cambridge.
Vermon was educated in the Dorchester County Public School System and was employed as a seasonal worker.
She was married to Luther Stanley who preceded her in death in 1964.
Following in her mother's footsteps, Vermon joined Union Chapel AME Church in 1954. Vermon was the oldest member of the church. She was affiliated with the Usher Board and served as President for the last 25 years. She represented Union Chapel well as she traveled, often alone, to various churches to serve as "Doorkeeper in the House of the Lord."
Again, following her mother, Vermon joined the Singing and Praying Band. After her mother's passing in 1993, Vermon became a Captain of the Singing and Praying Brand. She traveled by bus and car, up and down the shores of Maryland and sometime out of state with the band. Vermon loved both the band and the Usher Board members. She was also affiliated with several organizations, clubs and churches throughout the community.
She is survived by two sisters, Virginia Askins of Cambridge and Ethel Wells (Lovie) of Fort Myers, Fla.; three brothers, Lorenzo Henry (Lu) of Phoenix, Ariz., Franklin Henry (Janet) of Dryden, N.Y. and Leon Henry (Joyce) of Decatur, Ga.; her nieces, nephews, cousins and a number of friends, especially her second family, Victoria Jews and her family.
In addition to her parents, two sisters, one brother and three nephews preceded her in death, Peggy Chase, Shirley Henry, Fleetwood Henry Sr., Lorenzo Henry Jr., Edward Henry and Christopher Henry.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, at Union Chapel AME Church, Cordtown Road, Cambridge. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
There will be a viewing Friday from 7-8 p.m. at Henry Funeral Home, PA, 510 Washington St., Cambridge.
